If I recall correctly running Debian stable does not mean that all of the software you have has the newest bugfixes, just that it has been out long enough to be accepted as stable, but it's not necessarily secure. You should upgrade.

Why would you have to compile BitTorrent? It's written in Python thus interpreted.
