I'd hope that they would care. SCEA has been relying on the ps2 for years as a cash cow. If as you suggest, Sony sacrificed their next gen console to win the format war then where would that leave them? Basically it would leave them as a producer of cheap movie players. That's a step down for sure, and I have to think that Sony wants it both ways.

Actually some analysts gave vista not so bright outlook. Microsoft on the other hand had expected to sell 200 million copies of Vista to consumers and businesses worldwide in its first two years. Windows XP, by comparison, sold 120 million copies in its first 24 months.

You're definitely not winning friends here. I agree with you though. So far, Vista hasn't been that bad. My geforce card runs the dual heads without any issues and performance isn't bad at all. (3.8 ghz, 2gb ram)

A lot of people here call Vista a plague or a bloated POS. Sounds a bit like a head in the sand issue. I don't foresee any large corporations switching to mac/linux solely because of Vista. I'm not a Mac user, so perhaps someone can help me out. Could a homogenus mac-based network supply replacements for SQL server, SAP, exchange? Are the clients able to interoperate with the windows services they replace? Incremental upgrades are key.

It's not perfect, but as with XP it's "good enough".... and that seems to satisfy most people.

Here's my reason for disagreeing with this. If I were in a low income situation and forced to go to the public library for all my computing. I'd be pissed to find that I- as a consenting adult could not go to websites like myspace. If the small amount of money that I make is taxed, paying for roads and other public services.... I'd better be able to check a damn non-adult(read porn) website. Though I can understand (though perhaps have objections to) blocking all adult websites, social networking sites don't fall anywhere near the rubric.

Argue for public safety all you want. People determined to get on myspace will simply use a friends computer. Taxpayer dollars paying for this makes it a tough issue to call, but it seems to me that some sort of median level of acceptability should help define the standard, not exceptions.

then again, the alchohol might be talking.

and yes, I sympathize with the parents out there... but I doubt anyone here will claim that libraries blocking myspace will deter a teen from access. A bit like the DRM situation.

That being said, IMHO this won't be a VHS versus Betamax thing. There is too much manufacturing set up for both sides to simply abandon one format. I have to disagree with one format being immune to abandonment. Industry support for a format would dry up If consumers ignored it. Consumers don't care how much infrastructure has been invested in a format, only how well it works for them.

That said, I think both formats might come through this. Though it's still very early in the battle.
