lease read the article. Atkins has been discredited time and again, and this study is just another nail in the coffin. More info on Atkins is here [fumento.com].
What really sucks is that the Atkins diet works so well, when actually followed.
Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the person making a drastic change to their eating habits, like cutting out entire categories of food from their diet.
Any diet is a drastic change in eating habits. This one just happens to work without leaving the dieter feeling weak with hunger all the time. Wouldn't you consider that a major factor in its success?
dude, last year my dad was struck with colon cancer - after trying the Atkins approach for about 3-4 months. He attributes it to the rotting meat sitting in his gut.
I'm not colon cancer expert, but I'll bet it takes quite a bit longer than 3 to 4 months for polyps to form and become malignant cancers.
On top of which, Atkins himself suffered a heart attack just about a year ago [cnn.com]...
"Nutrition expert and author Dr. Robert Atkins, creator of the high-protein/low-carbohydrate "Atkins Diet," was released Wednesday from hospital care and is resting well after his heart stopped, a condition called cardiac arrest."
If you'd have bothered to read farther into the article, you would have seen this:
The episode was caused by cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood is weakened because of enlargement, thickening or stiffening of the heart muscle.
In Atkins' case, cardiomyopathy was caused by an infection that spread to his heart muscle.
"I have had cardiomyopathy, which is a non-coronary condition and is in no way related to diet," Atkins said in a statement.
A statement by The Atkins Companies also said the hot weather in New York may have been a factor in the cardiac arrest. Temperatures last week in New York were in the 90s.
"We have been treating this condition, cardiomyopathy, for almost two years," said Patrick Fratellone, Atkins' personal physician and cardiologist. "Clearly, his own nutritional protocols have left him, at the age of 71, with an extraordinarily healthy cardiovascular system."
Atkins told CNN, "I want the public to know the truth, not every condition affecting the heart comes from a blockage." He said "a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle really prevents risk factors for heart disease."
Doctors have checked for blockages, Atkins said, "and I don't have any."
Dr. Clyde Yancy, a cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a member of the American Heart Association's national board of directors, said: "Despite the obvious irony, I believe there is a total disconnect between the cardiac arrest and the health approach he (Atkins) popularizes."
Hawai'i ("two scoops rice, one scoop Mac salad") has the healthiest population of any US state, Texas has the least. I have to believe Texans have a diet *much* closer to the Atkins diet than Hawai'i.
You might be wrong. Texans eat large quantities of beans, tortillas, potatoes, and sugars, all high-carb items.
Of course, I've watched my girlfriend lose 1/3rd of her mass by strictly adhering to the Atkins diet. I'd be losing right along with her if I weren't supplementing the food she prepares with the addition of the aforementioned beans, tortillas, etc. I don't need to lose weight, and now she doesn't feel that she needs to lose any more either.
Low-carb diets change your metabolism. That's how they work, and that's why they are successful.
Try this experiment: Find a girl (I realize this will be difficult for you, as you smell of cheetohs and B.O.) and talk to her a little bit. You'll learn that there's more to life than a stupid nipponese cartoon.
How about the 'girl' I've been living with for almost a decade? She likes anime even more than I do.
You should put the dice down and get out of your friend's parent's basement for a while.
Kiki's Delivery Service had excellent dubbing - including Phil Hartman, who did a bang-up job as a disgruntled cat.
Unfortunately, this is a bad example. Phil Hartman did a great job of ad-libbing lines into the movie that never should have been there/weren't there in the original. He reduced the part to a typical Disney 'goofy sidekick' part.
They also butchered the orchestration, dumbing it down and adding unnecessary and unrelated interludes in the process.
I've not seen the subbed version yet (although subbed is my usual preference.)
The dubbed version is very well done. The voice acting is much better than was done on Princess Mononoke. FYI, the lead actress was Davleigh Chase, who was also the lead actress in Lilo&Stitch. She does good work.
They spent considerable effort creating excellent dubbs on Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, but simply will not promote those films in any way like they will their own releases. (I have yet to get a Kiki action figure at Burger King.)
You just answered your own question, oddly enough. Disney stupidly didn't get merchandising rights to the Ghibli films when they got distribution rights. They don't know how to promote an animated feature unless they can tie it in to Happy Meals. Merchandising is where they make most of their money from animation, anyway.
I was lucky enough to get a private showing during the first run. Well, not really private, but there was no one else in the theatre. No one in town knew the movie was there. The print was so clean I think they had not even been turning the projector on. No, it wasn't an 'art house' theatre, but a real multiplex. Off course, there were no lobby cards, newspaper ads, or any other type of promotion.
It's also possible that if Spirited Away sees another theatrical release, Disney will delay the DVD release for however long the movie is in theatres, plus a few months.
Why? What would Disney have to gain by doing this? They would actually make more money by putting the DVD out while the Oscar afterglow is still there.
The soundtrack for Laputa, even 16 years later, still touches a nerve. Joe Hisashi is incredibly talented - comparable to Alan Silvestri (of Forrest Gump fame).
The soundtrack was re-recorded for this new release, under the Hisaishi's direction. It's been redone with better arrangements and recording techniques.
Why, when I see any white speaking Japanese, watching "anime," wallowing in pseudo-Japanese culture, or wishing he were Japanese, do I immedately think "lives in his parents' basement with a career at the local Blockbuster"?
Why, when I see any boy speaking l33t, watching Sci-Fi, wallowing in gamer culture, or wishing he were a hacker, do I immedately think "lives in his parents' basement with a career at the local CompUSA"?

Try RC Diet. Caffeine & Splenda. Not bad tasting, either.
Teaching (and learning) begins at home. If it doesn't, it never occurs in school.
That would be two different people. Odd concept for you, I know.

Sorry.
