PONs sound very interesting (I just googled). I could see someone jamming a PON however! with light at the same frequency :) - again, if anyone understands DSL - (what the US uses mostly) they would understand it can't reach everywhere and there are holes in the service area because of the distances in neighbourhoods from the CO.

Basically - if the telcos can make money - they would deploy the networks. It's that simple.

You have a high-density population - in addition, that ADSL2 install was recent. I am generalizing - as that is all I can do. For the most part I am correct. By the way 1 to 10 megs is all the same to me. We're talking about people who barely have 56k. Read between the lines please.

I do not know what a PON is. I have a 155 OC3 connection at my office - the bandwidth is here, jut not everyone can get their hands on it.

In canada and US FTTH has almost the same build costs as ADSL. Rural areas will not get this service. Areas where there are holes in high-density populations (like UK) and metropolitan areas in US and Canada will get this eventually - that is not the problem. We're talking about people who barely get 56k! Not people who can get 1Meg.

Has anyone tried the high-speed in england? - generally people have 1 Meg connections not 3 to 10 meg in the states and canada. I understand the article is about penetration.

Rural areas do not have enough subscriber density for the telcos to spend $$$$ on deploying networks. Most of the networks are DSL based which are very distance sensitive, problematic for deployments of high-speed in low population densities . Networks are a city thing generally speaking - if you're living in the country to get away from the city - network access will be something you are getting away from! Same with loud neighbours, pollution, crime, etc, etc. I'm not saying that rural communities shouldn't have high-speed, but business is business. Why would a telco spend a bunch of money for no return? It doesn't add up. I know rural areas don't even have cable tv sometimes - no one seems to complain about that. Coax cable is an excellent medium for low densities as signals travel 10 to 20 times farther down the same lineage when compared with twisted pair.

My previous comments should be written up as insightful. Anyone listening to the show can tell you more about the Sirius/XM merger. XM is in trouble, not Sirius. Get it straight.

Sirius growth rate is much higher than XM. Sirius is looking good. Sirius is a success. All the experts said that Sirius needs about 1 1/2 million subscribers to be a success - they have 6 or 7 million. The company is doing well - out of the red.

Many people in here are complaining, saying they won't buy Sirius because of Stern - They don't know what the fuck they are talking about. They are just pissed off that he is off the 'free' air - now they have to pay to listen to him. Not buying a satellite system because of one of the channels? What about cable TV? There are porn channels if you want them! There are a lot of people here that think porn is a sin and will have nothing to do with it, yet they still PAY a cable company for service (a company who makes money off porn). This is totally on-topic --- can't you read between the lines?

If you don't like Stern - don't listen!

Actually, his show is far better on satellite then it ever was on terrestrial radio.

If you buy satellite radio (Sirius) I guarantee that you'll tune in to his channel one day, and something on his show will make you laugh. I used to be anti-Stern as well, but really the show is quite entertaining. All the challenging/serious computer work all day can make you want to listen to some fun trash talk. His show can be a de-stresser for me at times. Sometimes the show is dull / sometimes it is absolutely hilarious! Now that it's on satellite, give it a try. I think you can subscribe just to the on-line radio (Sirius has an internet feed). Try it for a month before you buy the hardware.

I go on long drives often (500km-1100km) - it's nice not having to hunt for radio stations while you're driving. Satellite has really changed the way I listen to music while driving. iPod - I have one of those. I'm a busy professional and don't have time to dink around downloading songs or bothering with DRM.

Linux users are a small number compared to OS/X / Windows - Deal with it - buy a computer elsewhere - send a message to the big companies. Why support the big companies anyway? They support MS! Cable can move data nearly error free. The distance (in the analog domain) between your telephone and you telephone company is the amount of lineage between your phone and your coax to telephone modem/router box. There are a few different schemes a company can use to transport audio information down a digital line. Lossless audio/lossy audio - full frame synced data transfer and asynchronous data / transmit contention / token / multiplex / etc. Codecs/PCM/etc... The cable infrastructure in Canada sounds better than traditional phone - as long as you call cable phone to another cable phone. If you call a land line from a cable phone it's only as good as the landline(*) - however that being said, the audio quality still has a better chance than analog to analog phone. There are a lot of variables -- it really depends on the implementation. (Slightly off topic but relevant): For instance, I know a lot of people that complain that their cable internet is slow or intermittent (we all know there could be several reasons for this) but that being said, the most common one I've found is cheap cable splitters or garbage old tv cable in the house degrading the cable modem signals.

Back to the phones: I have asked telephone techs and cable techs. The telephone system can run off their battery banks for a week or so, the cable guys say 2 days tops. The cable company here offers two telephony services: CableTelephone, or VoIP telephone over their high-speed cable service. The VoIP option is half the price.
