and your an idiot if you put any important data on a mobile device!

If the data wasn't important, why are you carrying the BlackBerry around anyway? BlackBerry isn't very unqiue in what a typical mobile phone can carry today (data). Address book information and email are delivered to both BB's and mobile phones. I know a lot of people who use BB with out a 'blackberry enterprise server' -- a 'BES' server. BB's do not have a lot of functionality when you don't have a BES server.

If you have a BB and it's connected to a BES server, the BES server has the ability to remotely destroy all the data on the BB (just call up your network admin and s/he will send the code to your phone).

I think it's silly to suggest that BB doesn't know how to setup this anti-pickpocket system. I'm sure there might be a way of bypassing this extra security, however I think overall this will reduce the number of 'data leak' situations. Any little bit of extra security helps. I don't know if I'm like most guys on here, but I would love a system to keep my girlfriend out of my phone.

Pickpockets are dumb - how many kazillions of car stereos have simiar anti-theft technology built in, but theifs still take them? Think of if you lose your wallet.... I know this has happened to a few people I know. They always say 'I don't care about the cash inside the wallet, just my drivers license, health card, etc, etc'. If I lost or had my BB stolen I all I would care about is the data - if the device is stolen, oh well, more reason to upgrade to the next model anyway.

I think the main reason for this system is to keep the average person out of your phone, and if someone is sneaking a peek, you'll know about it.

The search wasn't too bad, and the security guy was being really cool about it. Kinda embarrasing as you are pulled to the side of the line, in a booth (glass walls - what's the point?) and people see you going thru the bullshit. The good old dell laptop had it's ass inspected (x-ray/swab). If you have a real nice notebook, don't bring it on the plane. I would love to have stuff that looks questionable in my pocket just to see how they handle the situation (legit drugs that look shady, stuff like that). It doesn't sound like SBS made you leave your job - sounds like a greedy boss (just to get the sales/maintenance agreement) is selling inferior servers. You DO NOT sell a server with out RAID - I don't care who the client is. Also, having all of the services on one box is pretty stardard practice. Are you telling me that you would actually expect a small business to own multiple servers? Consider this: DHCP fails - How do you access any service at that point when a client switchs on their computer in the morning?

Why did you guys sell them the edition that includes ISA - it's twice the price - could have definately covered for a RAID system at that point!?

Put DHCP on the router if your worried - Printer services? Buy a standalone IP printer server (less than $90 bucks) - WINS you don't actually need that - but that's a windows service anyway, and it's usually pretty stable. Sounds like you guys aren't setting the boxes up right. I've done 40+ installations in the past 2 years and they are all damn reliable - only the very few odd problems here and there (as expected with computers).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming or anything, it's just I have found SBS to be fairly good - clearly you (your company) is/was doing something wrong for the most part. But not selling RAID? Come on! Never do that - it's not a server at that point 100% of all hard drives fail. I'm dealing with that issue right this minute actually.

There is a lot of overhead on P2P connections - if they didn't carry so much overhead, it wouldn't be much of a problem. YES - we offer our services to business only, and NO we don't charge expensive rates. We don't screw with VoIP traffic, and we actually pick up the phone when you have a support issue.

I think the best solution is optically coupled drives on a high-density controller board. You can actually have the drives remote from the server, but they act local. Imagine keeping half your hard disks in one side of the building and half on another side of a building!? That would definately help with redundancy (different power supplies) and physical seperation (flood, fire, theft) etc!

When I download I notice that the 155 Mbit/sec fiber connection really pulls the data in. I only reliably see this downloading from tucows or while I'm doing a windows update -- otherwise I'd say most of everything we do here is remote desktop, email, web, etc. The 100M connection won't matter much. I bet it would help with games, but it being a satellite station (if that's where the net comes from) I gotta wonder about the latency. I can tell you there wasn't a heck of a lot for them to do as far as getting it to the street. I am in a building built in the 50's. No one else here has fiber. There is a fiber 'box' down the street from us (a good 600 feet).

I am paying $950/month Canadian to Bell (1 year contract) for 10mbit/access. Then I pay the ISP about a $1000/month for 10 mbit/sec burst access (which is typically 8.5mbit/8.5mbit). (It runs very smooth.)

Point being: Bell had to use an underground tunnel boring machine. Took a crew of 5 guys 4 hours to drill 600 feet and install big ass conduit. That was the 'toughest' part for the Telco. My install fee was $2100.

Something is up with those prices. HydroTelecom here in Canada is the most expensive whore there is for getting dark fiber. They ALL want to sell you their services now, they make up BS reasons for not selling you dark fiber. Basically, the only thing you can do when you're a dark fiber customer is fix the fiber yourself, so you don't have the tool that tells you where the break in the line is. That is the telco's excuse for not wanting to sell dark fiber. They are bastards, really, they are. All you need is a couple of single mode optical to ethernet convertors. You can buy them in 2km to 100km power levels for $300 to $1500 each.

Keep digging! You'll get somewhere. BlackBox sells SDSL extenders that use dry copper - i've been using them for years (knock on wood) NO problem. There is also a company I saw on google called tahoe-group.com they sell expensive but 9.6mbit extenders for copper. Maybe that's your solution. DRY + Wireless failover technology.
