  1. Re:"Over 30"? Uhh, no. on 'Over 30' Section For Games Stores? · · Score: 1

Thank you for clarifying that before I even read the article. I was going to go on about how I'm 21, am legally allowed to drink, etc, etc, but that seems rather pointless now.

  2. Electronic mail is defined on Florida Judge Upholds Conviction By Defining "Email" To Include IMs · · Score: 1
    (7) "Electronic mail message" means an electronic message or computer file that is transmitted between two or more telecommunications devices; computers; computer networks, regardless of whether the network is a local, regional, or global network; or electronic devices capable of receiving electronic messages, regardless of whether the message is converted to hard copy format after receipt, viewed upon transmission, or stored for later retrieval.

Although this is not from the same statute, it is from a Florida statute. IMs would be covered under this definition. Similar definitions exist for all important terms in all statutes. Not doing so just opens up the law to be challenged. The definition must be narrow enough to confine the scope of the law, yet broad enough to prevent the law from becoming obsolete.
Unfortunately, electronic mail isn't specifically defined in the statute of interest (which if I'm correct is chapter 847 under Florida's criminal code), but do not fret, as transmit is.

    (1) For purposes of this section:

    (a) "Minor" means any person less than 18 years of age.

    (b) "Transmit" means the act of sending and causing to be delivered any image, information, or data from one or more persons or places to one or more other persons or places over or through any medium, including the Internet, by use of any electronic equipment or device.

and instant messaging is definitely covered by this.

In any case, if I have failed to find the proper laws, I'm sure that proper definitions are included in that law. Not doing so would be to open up the rulings to such cases as mentioned in the article. It's also important to note that the scope of the definition. In this case, the scope could be the entire statute, one chapter, or just one section. The definition cannot be transfered to another statute unless it is reasonable to do so, and then still the courts usually won't be able to act on it. Unless there are a bunch of statutes out there that don't define e-mail (and I highly doubt that there are), then it is at the judges discretion.

There are some other complexities here that I won't bother going into, but that's the gist of it.

  3. Two Words on Computer Services for Students? · · Score: 1

Network Drives. Anything I have on my university network drive I can access from anywhere that has an internet connection. It isn't much (just a couple hundred MB), but is often just as easy as using a USB drive. It's accessable through ftp and Net Storage, Novell's online client, and also through Novell's desktop client (although this last method is not endorsed by the IT staff, and therefore receives no support when things go bad). A number of applications are hosted on other drives as well, accessable from lab computers (or home computers with Novell installed). All data is stored in at least triplicate, possibly even more redundant, as the main harddrives are RAIDed, and backed up nightly off-site (which is actually still on campus, just the opposite end).

  4. Re:3 main ways... CS, ECE, or ME on How Do You Get Into Robotics? · · Score: 1

To expand on this, the majority (if not the entirety) of a robot design team will consist of mechanical, electrical, computer and software engineers, as well as computer scientists. On some occasions, other engineering disceplines will be involved, but not to the same level, and not as often. Engineering is by far the best way to get into robotics as a profession. And although specializing in robotics isn't a sure bet at getting into the field, the experience makes you very employable in complementary fields (system control for electricals as an example).

  5. Re:Like in humid environments on How to Run a Computer in a Sub-Zero Environment? · · Score: 2, Informative

Correct. Condensation will only form on objects which are below the dew point. Someone more qualified than myself could give a better explaination, but the dew point (usually as a temperature) is defined in terms of the barametric pressure and the humidity. Also, at very low temeratures (ie below zero), you really don't have to worry about the amount of moisture in the air. The partial pressure of water vapor at freezing is 0.61kPa (6.1mbar). As a comparison, one atmmosphere (1atm) is 101.3kPa, and the partial pressure of water vapor at room temperature (usually 22 or 25 degrees C) is about 2.9kPa.

  6. Just Relax on Coping with Exam Panic Attacks? · · Score: 1
From the sounds of it, you felt fairly confident going into this exam, and from my experience, that means your panic attack was triggered by one of two things: you were thrown a curveball halfway through the paper, or you had built up stress from previous exams, and this was just the straw that broke the camels back.

If the first posibility is the case, then there's not much you can do about it except try to keep it from getting to you. If on the other hand the second posibility is what caused your panic attack, there are loads of thing you can do to prevent it from happening again. Most importantly, I think, is that you be relaxed before, during, and after each exam. It's important that we get a little stress now and again, but too much is damaging to our health. The not caring approach mentioned earlier is very good for right after the exam. I, however, prefer to spend time with frineds after an exam, and if the exam schedule permits, throwing back a couple of cold ones. This is especially true if I want to just forget those three hours of my life so that they can't bother me at my next exam. For you, do anything that you know relieves stress for you. Breathing deeply, working out, whatching tv, whatever works for you.

  7. This got me thinking. on ESRB Ratings Unfairly Targeted? · · Score: 1

Think about the last time you saw a tv ad for a game. Any game. Now think about the very beginning or very end of that ad. Most likely, it had the ESRB's mark in a corner and the spoken words "This game rated T for teen" or some such. Now think about a movie trailor. Forget about direct to DVD for a moment. I don't think I've ever heard "This film rated AA for adult accompaniment." or "This film rated R for restricted." (or the American equivilents). All you get is a relatively (compared to game ads) short shot of the rating, which also includes the studio, the producers, the main actors, the release date, and a number of other pieces of usless information. The games industry is doing everything it reasonably can to protect their consumers. The same can't be said about the movie and tv industries.

  10. Winamp can do this for you. on Redirecting Audio from PC to PC? · · Score: 1

I had a similar situation a number of summers ago when both my brothers and my own computer occupied a KVM switch with one set of speakers. I'm assuming that you already share files over your network, because otherwise this solution is useless unless all your music is on the media center PC. This Winamp plugin will allow you to control Winamp on your media center PC through an internet browser. Simply type in the internal IP and you're all set (once of course you set up the plugin to begin with; a fairly easy task). Since playlist files need not reside on the local computer (ie the media center PC), but just at an accessable location (anywhere on your LAN), your entire colection can stay right where it is (be it on the server or the media center). It might not be the most elagant solution, but it works.

  11. Re:Distribution Amps on Poor Man's Whole House Audio? · · Score: 1
This is the basic premiss I'd work on. This particular model may not be the best for you, but it's the right idea. Some things to look for: It must be powered. Unpowered systems make for serious attenuation and/or fried sound cards. Make sure it splits the signal when it's at the proper level. A preamp splitter placed between an amp and an unpowered speaker will either cause some serious clipping (bad, a major cause of distortion), or blow the splitter (unlikely, but possible). A postamp splitter between the source and an amp isn't as bad, but still not recomended.

Also, when deciding between pre- and postamp splitters, consider the length of wire you'll need to run. Anything more than 25ft, 50 at max (7.5m, 15m) and you'll want (read: need) preamp in order to avoid distortion and noise (for those of you who say you can run 150ft of powered cable, I say you're right. I've done it before, but never for a residential application). Less than that 25ft, it's up to you.

It's an autorun. If you aren't fully forewarned (like I was for another of Sony's CDs), you have no choice but to install the software. Also, although it's hear-say, there are some specifics about the software that isn't mentioned in the EULA (which, for once, I did read (well, at least some of it)). And if I'm not mistaken, there is some DRM software installed before you even agree to the EULA, just so that if you don't agree, you can't go back and do it properly.
