Yeah no kidding... where are the COBOL jobs? Yeah I see them in Monster and other places but they are looking for me or you, they are looking for overseas peeps. I have no problem working with the most obscure COBOL and its JCL. I clean the stuff up too, because it is important to do that. Seriously tho, who the fark is hiring? Cause I would like to know.
Illinois is solidly Democratic. This bill was dead on arrival as soon as the Republican Senator signed his name to it. He obviously did it for attention and/. obliged.
Of course maybe part of the problem is that Ben Affleck isn't worth $12 million. Maybe.. just maybe movie stars are making waaaaaayyyy too much. Surely you can find someone with talent to star in a movie for a more down to earth salary of... say $100,000 a year? or less. If you are losing money.. maybe its because your overhead is too much. Stop blaming your 'customers'.
I like the prospect of an "iTV"
I would like to see a 30" iMac with the following:
a) a pair of hot swappable raided hard drives that slide in from the bottom,
b) a built in international HDTV tuner, two perhaps?
c) full featured 1080p capability with a BlurRay/HD DVD player,
d) suitable ports to connect the iMac to and from my stereo system.
e) the ability for the iMac to function as a full blown DVR/TiVo/Media Center etc...
f) all that tied into all that iTunes goodness.
Mahkno
How about being honest with the ballots and put the Electors names on them instead of the Presidential candidate. You are electing Electors... not a President. Later in December the Electors actually do what they were elected to do. If the public knew who the electors were then maybe those craven souls would be persuaded to choose the best candidate for the country and not always vote party line.
Look around, how many software packages are available to encourage, enable and are targetted to 8-12 year olds. NONE. There was a point where schools were attempting to teach that age group fundamental computing. Not script writing for games or website design. Basic computing. Heck schools aren't teaching the other stuff either. More n more of the materials to learn computer programming is being geared for and designed for college students and professionals. You have to inspire kids to want to do programming. I think the trend towards fewer programmers has less to do with competition from India but rather from the failure of the industry to develop tools and materials for the age of child that can best be inspired to dream of that career path. Waiting until college is a wee bit late. The age to inspire is the 8-12 year olds. That is when I learned to program. Things were simpler then but the core documentation was readily available and affordable. Not so anymore.
The trend toward fewer CS majors began 10 years ago when materials suitable for the 8-12 year old began to disappear.
It is hard to see it happening. A major Fortune 50 (fifty) company I am familier with, has invested millions of dollars in proprietary software to run on Windows 2000 machines. They are neither keen to, nor perhaps able to update the enormous quantity of code generated. They have not even migrated to Windows XP due to the expense that would be incured, not by Microsoft, but rather, by in house updating. In many ways they have fallen into the same trap that they did with mainframe software. As much as some people would like to be rid of it, it is simply impracticle to do away with them. The costs are too dear.
There is one lesson that he overlooked that seems to pervade video games. That lesson is that 'Cheating is OK'. How many games have cheat codes? How many games are Xploited to the detriment of competitors? How much WoW gold is purchases on eBay and not earned? How many 'Mods' are you running when you play a game? It is all good if you don't get caught and the penalties if you are, are minor.
It is more likely that OSX will be re-positioned to compete with Windows head on, than jettisoned. Right now, Apple is saying that OSX will be designed to run just on their machines. Phooey. If the time is right, Apple will more likely lift that impediment and allow the rest of the PC world run OSX instead of Window$.
Open up Disney's huge catalogue of short animations pieces, sell em for a $1. Nice...
When is the last time you saw a short Mickey Mouse cartoon? Exactly.

Yay... strip mining for oil. This will go over well.
"IT professionals are being forced to adopt Microsoft's operating systems"
... anyone need a real Professional?
What? These 'IT Professionals' can't wipe a harddrive?
Really, who writes this stuff? And if they really can't um... gosh

PBS ran a documentary on this a few years ago. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/case_plague/index. html
30 months? What if someone gets pregnant?
Talk about a complication.... can hear the right to lifers complaining already.
Ooh... So in 2006 we can expect Apple to compete head on with Microsoft over OSs?
