The idea that someone suffering severe depression can simply just "stand up for themselves" in adversity is incredibly insensitive.
People saying that are stupid, not insensitive. You might as well tell someone with diabetes or AIDS to just "stand up and shake it off."
That's because depression is not a same kind of beast. Depression, while it can be of physical causes too, is also a state of mind. You certainly have more voluntary control over it than over diabetes or AIDS.
While I'm not mega-old yet myself, I also find that the crave to listen to music has significantly decreased as I've grown up. It's not explained away simply by saying that the music is crap these days, as I think there's lot of good stuff around.
'At the beginning of the digital revolution it was common to say that digital was killing music,' said Edgar Berger, chief executive of the international arm of Sony Music Entertainment. Now, he added, it could be said 'that digital is saving music.'
Isn't this what everyone at Slashdot have wanted? Adapting the music business to the modern world and new practices. Now we are getting there.
CD sales are declining, and being replaced by the sale of lossy files. I wonder how much more money they could be making if they'd just sell folks lossless music on the open market (not just iTunes) since at least that's all that keeps me buying a CD or three a year
There should be no problem including a FLAC as a download option, and that is what should be done. The full audio master image wouldn't be a bad idea either.
secret hint, all digital TV boxes report back to the mother ship what channels you record and when, what channel you are watching, and what shows you watch later
Wait, what? What kind of boxes are we talking about?
I know a feature we need: an option to not allow the browser to open new windows in any situation. See, there is the standard pop-up blocker in every browser, but there is still some scripts which are triggered to open a new advertisement window when you click the current page, for example.
An interesting scenario is one where you could ask a psychologist "do you think it is about something that happened in my childhood?". Then you hand the full tapes and an expert could do an accurate review of what actually happened.
When I wanted to use OtherOS, I found myself stuck in a multiplayer game between the hobbyists, Sony's marketing department, Sony's software developers, and Sony's legal team.
OtherOS was just a hack to put some computer functionality there to get around the EU game console tax.
I guess you didn't bother to RTFA, and I don't use Facefuck, Shitter, or any other 'social networking'
yeah, I read the fucking article, but actually know a little about the industry, instead of just trolling for page views.
wtf are 'page views' here, dimwit? OP doesnt look like he was trolling either, and you're probably a 16 year old kid in mom's basement. enlighten us oh wise one since you know so much about the fucking industry. ass.
Aahh... these crispy, eloquent comments is why I come to Slashdot.
Remember that the reason for Sony to initially have some (crappy) Linux support in PS3 was only to get around the game console tax in EU, as then the unit could be sold as a computer.
Another thing that is forgotten in the "Sony sucks" discussions that the early batch of PS3s had nasty overheating problems.
Fine for regular folk. Us enthusiasts have vastly higher expectations, and we're not a shrinking market.
So you would like even more expensive laptops? My point was that the $1,500 premium price of an ultrabook could already easily include a Nvidia top chip.
While the desktop is always a bit broken, at least the open source graphics tools for Linux are excellent.
- Blender - Inkscape - Gimp
There might be some certain enterprise features missing, but the tools are not "broken" in any way. The pack is completely usable for semi-professional work right now.

It's not easy, lot of bad in the world gets reported, because bad news sells papers.
A lot of stuff goes really great in the world. The bad news are just the minor exceptions reported. :)

No one gives two fucks about lossless audio except us nerds and anyone that makes music.
So sell a lossless copy and make more money from nerds. Profit.
That's why he said "with a back channel".

The first 10 messages are an appeal from Jimmy Wales and various information like "This article does not use citations to back up its claims..."

Wait, what? What kind of boxes are we talking about?
Then it possibly does not work at all.

IE10 does exactly that. If you open YouTube videos to background tabs, they won't start playing until you activate the tab.
For Firefox, I recommend installing the Flashblock addon, which allows you to start Flash plugins manually by clicking them.
+1
How about muting all tabs except the one currently open with the option of enabling/disabling any tab explicitely?
Much of the noise can be avoided by allowing plugins only by clicking.

fuck my life, i want to record my dreams
I want to dream my life and record my fuckings.
Wouldn't that make you look a bit desperate?
I have to ask.....why do you care? It's not your problem.
Maybe he's slightly control freak and would desperately want to get that problem fixed behind the scenes in their systems.
Yeah, I could imagine that the Napster client was quite swiss cheese what it comes to security.

Is the GNU Hurd kernel a good choice for teaching or OS study in general?

Protecting the weak is more important than optimizing the gene pool.

This works, and should be improved even further.
