  1. Very bad in a printing accident. on World's Fastest Inkjet Printer? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Speeds like that can be disasterous during a printing accident. Recently in the office a young secretary accidentally printed out (on one of our 75 pages/min printers) numerous copies of a document around 400 pages in length. Thankfully it was just black-and-white text, rather than colorful images.

In any case, it took her a full two minute to realize her mistake, and another four or five minutes to figure out how to stop the print job. By that time she had printed off about 500 worthless pages.

When it comes to these machines, printing mistakes can be costly and difficult to deal with. It's unfortuante that many of these printers can hold 5000+ pages of paper. While convenient, it is just screaming for disaster!

But what's to say that the open source community won't provide a similar level of support for non-Apple devices? Nothing! The nature of Apple's IOKit framework allows for device drivers to be written extremely easily. 6. It's just a repeat of NeXT. on Dvorak Says Apple Move to Intel Will Harm Linux · · Score: 0

This whole situation has basically been a repeat of NeXT. Does anyone remember when they released NeXTSTEP 3.0 for the i486? Well, they also changed their name from NeXT Computers, Inc., to NeXT Software, Inc. That was done to signify their move away from hardware back to being solely a software provider. That is what is happening with Apple today. They are becoming a software-only provider, while moving towards the commoditization of their hardware. Now the question we should be asking is who will purchase Apple Software, Inc., in five or six years and provide a full-packaged hardware solution again. At this point it would seem to be Sun, since they are amongst the only remaining vendors with their own CPU architecture. But perhaps we may even see a company such as IBM purchasing Apple in half a decade or so to provide the software for a series of high-performance cell-based workstations.

What is the name of the developer who reintroduced this bug? It is often said about the open source community that the level of accountability just isn't enough. This is a main reason why corporations aren't as willing to transition to platforms such as Mozilla or OpenOffice. Corporate types will want to know which developer it was who reintroduced this seven-year-old bug, and what the Mozilla Project plans to do to prevent a similar incident from ever occurring again.

Not to mention that there are doubts as to whether or not Longhord will be completed within a reasonable time frame. But still, this is a point we must consider: by the time Microsoft is tried for their monopolistic behavior, will they still be a monopoly, or merely a player in the burgeoning oligopic personal computer market?
