Yes that/etc,/usr/local/etc shit happened somewhere around 3.x to 4.x if my boooze brain can recall But I still hate rc.d!
One suggestion for such staff problems could be to have an "apprentice" in at the start, loads of college aged wanna-be admins these days, thanks to Linux etc

OS X is supplied with a copy of vi I know I had to use it once on a Mac but my brain can't remeber what it was, I know it turned out to be the DVD drive had died but this was before I knew that (used one of those Mac OSX manuals, not that familare with them, one or two per a year)
