Sorry, but phones use one byte per number, and while yes, they could use two, they use one, because it is esaier to deal with, because then they see that 1=a certain tone, 2=..., etc..., whereas you are suggesting that they say, hmm, split 18 into 1 and 8, then deal with it. It is also easier to convert from hex without dealing with two digits, because then they just look at the last digit of the hex, rather than doing math (i.e. : 0x01 0x08 vs. 0x12, the 0x12 is smaller, but would you immediately know that 0x12=18, or that 0x01 and 0x08 = 18) Take a look at the tF card in your phone, you'll see thet if you do a hex dump, there is one byte per character.
First of all, knock off the "starter edition" altogether in most parts of the world. Even the countries where it exists, it's not used significantly. I'm socked Microsoft is even maintaining that idea at all.
The "Starter Edition" isn't about wanting another edition of Vista, it's about price. Now, microsoft can brag about Vista costing $20 bucks or whatever, but that only buys you a copy of DOS branded as Vista. then they go in and charge you 400+ for the "Ultimate edition."
Another thing, if they make a cheap version, it will be doing what the music industry did, they're offering a version in which you can pick which pieces of the OS you want, and charge less. This won't eliminate the problem, but should allieviate the problem, b/c why steal when you can just get a legit copy for less than dirt?
I'm not trying to say that Microsoft is good, simply that there is reasoning behind at least three (Starter, Home, Ultimate) of the versions. Those are the three versions they should be coming out with.

You can have a photosensor that is less than half a wavelength, as the same principals apply to both radio waves and light waves (for the most part) otherwise, to recieve an AM radio signal, you would need a 300 meter (I was going to use the abbreviation 'm', but dicided that ambiguity wasn't good) antenna, whereas the antenna on your car is not 300 meters long, probably closer to 3 feet or ~1 meter. Yes, the photosensors would be expensive, because for the bot to be practical, it needs to have decent resolution pictures, and photosensors aren't 1 or 2 NANOmeters across, but they could be.
Basically, I'm trying to say that all it needs to see is the distance from peak to peak of the wavelength, BUT it will be expensive, because they need to cram about 1 million photosensors on that 'bugbot'.
