  1. Down the Rabbit Hole we go! on Mercury Contamination Vs. Energy-Efficient Lightbulbs · · Score: 5, Interesting

Have you ever heard the term "Mad as a Hatter"? Maybe, but you probably do know who the Mad Hatter is.

Mad as a Hatter is a term that stems from "Hatters" (hat makers) using Mercury in the formation of hats. It was used in the process of removing hair from animal hides. All the hatters ultimately went insane or had the other symptons of mercury poisioning.

That's where the term comes from, and that's where the idea for the "Mad Hatter" came from for Alice in Wonderland. What does this have to do with the article? Nothing really, just trying to spread some random information.

I would think that this also has to do with the fact that the format, although new, is still somewhat familiar in terms of the media (looks like a DVD).

When the switch from VHS to DVD occurred (lets pretend Laserdisc never existed) people were going from a big plastic rectangle to a small shiny disc. I would expect some hesitancy there, even though people were accustomed to CDs at that time. But now the change is very small, a Blue Ray disc looks very much like the tried and true DVD disc.

We're not talking about buying kids beer, or drugs, or pr0n. We're talking about helping them with their popularity (apparently myspace pages = popularity in many schools, at least that's what the kids tell me).

Also, the police won't be showing up for a proxy server, they would not bother with that. Worst case would be a nice cease and desist letter to your billing address, at which point if it's not economically viable to you, you can just stop it.

When Ford Perfect says "you can still design your own tracks" he means "pretty much every track is made by a user" There are about 60 NADEO (game maker) tracks and probably well over 100K tracks on more than 300 worldwide servers (1.4 million players).
You have to actively search to find a server that plays the NADEO tracks if that's your thing but the user tracks can be amazing... they can also suck.

If you own one of the other games in the Trackmaina series (TM original or TM Sunrise) you can "activate" your account and use ingame skins that all players can see (if not activated you are the only one to see yours, but you still see others) Activation also has a few more perks but having your own car model is the main attraction.

The game has a pretty good ranking system according to points (you gain points for beating players better than you) and you can find out how you rank in the world, on a certain server, or in your country. For a free game this has many features that games costing $40+ don't even include.

It can be downloaded on many websites (google: Trackmania nations) and at around 220MBs is definetly worth it in my book. System requirements aren't that bad either.

As for the ads... well there are many ways of getting around them. But I just bought TM Sunrise from Overstock for $14. I figured NADEO deserved my money for putting out a game I enjoy so much for free.

Luckily they don't block or filter but as many of you might remember the internet was at a standstill that day. Everything was loading super slow. I couldn't get to any of the major news site (ABC, NYT, CBS, CNN, NBC, I even attempted Fox News) so I had to go to bbc.co.uk to get info on what was going down, that and a forum I frequent. Had they been blocked I would have had no idea what was going on. Not for nothing but I am from NY and had alot of family down there. They were all fine but I had a vested intrest in the happenings, more so then some, but hardly any compared to many.

On a side note, the guy next to me had gotten Everquest to run on his computer (still don't know how) and he was getting updates by talking to a person in the game who had a TV. Nothing like finding out the second tower got hit by a guy named "magic_emperor24"

  16. Re:Possible explanation on Deja Vu Recreated in a Lab Setting · · Score: 1

I remeber reading a (at least) 50 page study on Deja Vu in college (studied Psychology). It concluded that Deja Vu occurs when a "glitch" happens in your brain and you are recalling the current situation from your long term memory.

I will try and better explain. When you recall things from you long term memory you understand that these things are memories. When you think about the current situation you are recalling it from your short term memory, and you undertand it as currently happening or that it just happened. When Deja Vu occurs (according to the study) it is your brain pulling (thinking about) the current information from your long term memory. Thats is why you think it already happened, because you understand it to have already happened. That is also why it only lasts for a short period of time, because the brain catches up.

The study in this article does not prove this theory wrong. They are studying which part of the brain is showing activity, but they do not yet know what part of the brain is actually involved in short term or long term memory. So the parts that are showing activity could be the long term memory banks or the short term, or these parts are used for the same thing. Science just does not know at the present time.

If they did make these mandatory (like a Nation wide ID card) then we should all throw them in the Microwave on a planned day and the next day go to the issuing agency and say "it no longer works" if 150,000 people or more did this I think the Governement would realize that they can't afford to fix them all, then scrape the program. This, although meant to be a joke, actually has some merit. When NY passed their "no smoking indoors" bill a few years back the loopholes started. The law was put in place to prohibit smoking in Bars, Restaurants, Clubs, etc. It was there to sheild the employees who work in those places and have to inhale all the second hand smoke.
Well Bingo took a huge hit, if you have never been to a bingo parlor they are usually so smoke filled you could barely see the board. Bingo being run by most Churchs and Schools were complaining big time to their elected officals. These places were given "test site" permits which allowed them to stay open to smokers.
There were no too many of these "test site" permits given out, but they do exist. And if you could go around the State and find where all of them exist, I am sure you will find they exist in areas where the local Politicians are active members in what ever Church got the pass. I know of two in Rensselaer county were set up in that manner.
