"Most scientific studies have found no link between depleted uranium and negative health effects such as cancer, liver damage, and birth defects, but many people point to other evidence that suggests a link." "A 1997 report by the European Committee on Radiation Risk (ECRR) suggested that DU posed serious health risks. By contrast, other studies have shown that DU ammunition has no measurable detrimental health effects, either in the short or long term. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports, "based on credible scientific evidence, there is no proven link between DU exposure and increases in human cancers or other significant health or environmental impacts," although "Like other heavy metals, DU is potentially poisonous. In sufficient amounts, if DU is ingested or inhaled it can be harmful because of its chemical toxicity. High concentration could cause kidney damage." National Geographic Magazine had reported way back in October 2004 about the dangers New Orleans faced.
The chances of such a storm hitting New Orleans in any given year are slight, but the danger is growing. Climatologists predict that powerful storms may occur more frequently this century, while rising sea level from global warming is putting low-lying coasts at greater risk. "It's not if it will happen," says University of New Orleans geologist Shea Penland. "It's when."

This whole thing reminds me of High School a few years ago, seeing all of these teachers with Dell computers with MS software, refusing to use them because they're either afraid of them or don't know how. Government paid for, not used even by the people they were intended for. Great system.

This whole thing is just a big load of garbage. First of all, I don't consider this guy an expert on the human brain. "Industrial Psychologist" seems little more than a businessman with a fancy degree. (consider his Professional Experience and his CV, all business related, not brain related) Plus I don't think I have to go into how suspect the terms "smart" and "intelligence" are. He didn't even do any original research (which may mean that this isn't even really a study..), this is basically just a regurgitation of old "selected" research. It's basically a high school research paper. Anyone know how to find out if "Intelligence" is peer reviewed or not? Imagine how dangerous this would be if business people believed it. If there's data out there that says whites have bigger brains than blacks, hire whites over blacks. If men on average have bigger brains than women, hire men over women. I wonder how many other bosses would consider "highly intelligent people" to be more productive than normal folks?

  9. Fear for funds? on North Korean Hackers Rival CIA? · · Score: 1

How does Dr. Byeon (Byun?) Jae-jeong know what capabilities the CIA has? If South Korea is aware of "39 wiretapping devices", shouldn't they be able to shut them down? Assuming all of this is true, even if the US power grid is hacked into and knocked out by North Korea, would it really take that long to get it back up and running? The Blackout of 2003 didn't seem to be a huge catastrophe. I *highly* doubt that US Pacific Command is vulnerable to any sort of internet attack, but I could be wrong. (From The Korea Times) "Byun called on the government to increase the budget for the buildup of the core capability needed to cope with advanced scientific and information warfare, especially for the protection of information." Maybe this guy just wants more money and is willing to make stuff up to get it?
