Geographic terms and definitions vary depend on where you were educated.
North America and South America are just two parts of the same continent for many people.
The one 6 and all 5 and 4 continent models have them as just two parts of the same continent. (and yes, I have never seen central america labeled as one)
The fact that you immediately attack the person instead of the subject, and add on some expletive deletives tells me more about you than I wanted to know.
Please don't travel outside our borders, you will just make it even harder for the rest of us. I have friends who have already had to resort to pretending they are Canadian when they travel. (And yes, if I ever left it would be to Canada, Norway, Switzerland or Australia, all seriously nice countries. Very level headed people and well liked by the rest of the world-we should strive for that some time)
No other country has the arrogance to call themselves the United States of Europe or the United States of Asia. If China or Germany did that, do you think the other Europeans or Asians would take kindly to them refering to themselves as Europeans or Asians exclusivly?
If we have a citizen of Mexico up here calling himself an American, he is right, but we do not take that too well. How do you think they feel every time we address the American people? It is clearly NOT for them, but what makes the less American than us? (heck, some of them have bloodlines that have been here much longer) Just another example of us being out of touch with the feelings of anyone outside the USA. We are myopic, and most don't even know it.
Fellow countrymen, feel free to mod me down on this one too, I am getting used to it.
Do you notice the difference. Every other example you gave has the countries given name and the word REPUBLIC or KINGDOM(noting the form of government). NOT THE USA!
For the USA they use the words UNITED STATES and then the name of a continent (yes, some would count it as two continents).
Nowhere else in the world is there a continent of Brazil, China etc. What if China decided to become the "UNITED STATES OF ASIA". Do you think the other asian countries would be happy that the Chineese now think they are the true "Asians" and that being "ASIAN" means that you are a citizen of former China?
What, do we think we own the whole hemisphere? Maybe it is because I spend a good deal of my time travelling around the world, but the arrogance of our county has made us contemptable in most of the world. Heck, while most Canadians are very good to us, even they dislike our country now that we have screwed them over so many times. Why do people think South America is turning so Anti USA? For fun? NO, we have traded being a respected world leader for being a super power bully. It will not last for long, China etc. is going to whip our ass, and we are too dumb to realize it.
When asked citizenship at our border, I once responded "American" and the Department of immigration officer said "there is no such thing".
I like the mod point whipping I have taken from my fellow countrymen, but you know what? It is worth it if only ONE person realizes what we are doing to ourselves as we push around the rest of the world.
The English? They are from England, and they are the place the English language eminated from. That seems a good enough reason for me. USers only habitate a SMALL part of the continent, pretending that being an AMERICAN means being a US citizen is insulting to every other nation in the Americas.
Oh I forgot... Only the US counts. Could this be why we are now hated world wide???
Cmon, I know you need the hyperbola to get comments, but most of the Linux users I know of believe the Linux is growing IN SPITE of Linus, not because of.
If you want to see respect try the Stallman followers. He does not have the charisma, and he is not marketed, but if people follow him it is because they have grown to appreciate what his vision has accomplished, and that he is right so many times it makes him look almost god like.
First off, as many say, Hans has pointed the finger at this guy since the beginning.
Second, if you have followed Hans and his interviews, you would know that Nina's dissapearance (as reported) is very unlike Hans. He is a person obsessed with little details, having everything planned out and checking out all scenarios no matter how implausable. If he were to commit a murder while still mentally sound, there should be NO circumstactual evidence.
He would not have bought the book AFTER murdering. He would not have left traces of blood (if he did murder, I think these are fabricated, as he would not have left them).
Yes, lets lock down EVERYTHING in the country, and then to improve security even more, give all the keys to the govenment.
We could not tackle or fix the real problem, no way. The fact we are creating a society where there is NO RIGHT OR WRONG... the only questions one should ask before doing something is "will it benefit me" and "can I get away with it". (the government and big business teach us this lesson every day)
Lets tackle our problems with lack of morality with technological means. Ya right, that will work.
There is no Underdeveloped world or Developing world, it is just one world? You do not travel much do you. Tell the people that in Haiti etc. They are very much stuck in the third world, and they CANNOT get out. Most of them would love to work in a sweatshop things are so bad. Even in one of the better countries (Venesuela) I saw kids scavaging for food in the a garbage dump right near downtown(Caracus).
Lets get one thing straight... THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH OVERPOPULATION! The problems we have are 1) Western Society consumes like there is no tommorow 2) We don't give a Crap about developing the third world or improving the conditions there 3) There is tons of food, just no reason to distribute it properly. (no profit in that) 4) Third world governments often prevent thier own people from producing properly and/or instability keeps the people from being able to care for themselves.
Question... If you really care, what do YOU do to help those people who you pretend to know something about. Will you match my giving to groups that work in these lands to better the lives. (A few thousand gives you benifits at tax time as well) World Vision etc. do very good work.
Bottom Line, the truth still remains: The developed world is underprocreating at an alarming rate(to fast of a shrink does not produce a stable society). The underdeveloped world needs help, and they will keep procreating until they get educated.
(By the way, claiming that I said that having more childern solves overpopulation is a nice Strawman. )
I did a contract for Meijer IT on Walker in Grand Rapids a few years ago. This is a classic case of a brilliant Man (Fred Meijer) who built a multi billion dollar empire, and now, the greedy (harvard educated?) kids are running it, trying to bleed out every red cent.
There is no such thing as enough money, so the IT staff have faced wage freezes, the great onsite cafeteria (no nearby eateries) basically shut down etc. In the mean time, they had shoved people into managing IT projects that should not have even been allowed in the seperate IT building(another mistake I think). Some of the best contractors I knew there were pushed out because they were smarter than the boss. All in all, a typical disfunctional IT department.
The only reason they have any staff left is because the IT economy sucks in the area (mostly rinky dink MS stuff, almost like they have never heard of Java etc.), and somehow the other two larger employers seem not to hire staff from Meijer and vice versa. The story is reported that there is an agreement not to hire from each other to keep the wage rates down.
Like many others, my first thought reading the intro was "So, women are smart enought to get out of a cruddy field. Try medicine, where being average is definitely NOT harder than being good at IT, but it is sure a lot more rewarding."
I even know of a guy who didn't make it into medicine, but is making just as much selling for a drug company.
Well written, I cannot believe the uneducated comments on this site pertaining to population growth. Two of the worst countries I know of for a low birth rate are Italy and Canada.
Italy is really at risk, and Canada - well if you go to Toronto or Vancouver you might as well be in Asia, because everyone there has immigrated in the last 25 years. (a slight exageration but not much. It does make for a more diverse selection of food usually. Well execept in TO especially around UofT, There used to be great Greek food trucks, now I notice they are ALL Chineese - that is not variety)
The best birth control is EDUCATION! It has been proven time and time again.
Over population is not a problem in the developed world. Instead the problem is under procreation, and when there is procreation, it is usually by the wrong people in the wrong environment.
Firstly, the birth rate of developed nations does not sustain the population base. That is why there is rampant immigration. Unfortunately, this is often not selective enough, and we bring the problems from the original countries.
Second, when we do procreate, it is often by the "welfare sluts". Great, now the large families all have five different fathers, few of whom spend any time with the childern, many of them just abusing. These poor kids have more hurdles to overcome than I can imagine.(my hat off to those who do overcome)
Yes, we need more professionals making the VERY LARGE sacrifice of having childern and raising the WELL.
That does NOT make him a conservative any more than you handing out tuna treats to the neighborhood feline's makes you a cat. (it does make the voters appear stupid however)
Sorry to hear about your bad luck.
I bought two of those "Atomic clocks" that recieve the atomic time signal from the southern US. Both of them changed time correctly. I was amazed!
Next time get one of those, they rock!
Good point. Another option is the Linksys NLSU2 or the newer Gigabit Buffalo storage device. Do some homework to figure out how you are going to spin down the hard drives ahead of time. (do you want to buy a drive that supports it, or do it in software)
I agree, screensavers are a power robber. Not only does the cpu/gpu work harder(thus consume current), the monitors are active as well.
On the other hand, I want to caution that in Monitors or TV's, LCD's do not always save much power per inch of display. It depends on the model. I have one CRT that takes only 30 percent of the standby power of one of my LCD's. Since they are "off" more than on, this negates a lot savings.
An interesting side note, my CRT takes less power when displaying a primarily black screen, my LCD's don't.
Sorry dude, Core 2s do NOT have significantly lower power consumption than AMD processors. And even when they do, it is not so spectacular when you factor in the lack of a memory controller. (I like the Core 2, hate the P4)
Sorry, this is a COMPLEX subject. How so? Intel and AMD measure Power needs by a different yardstick. AMD makes many parts, has two different processes, and even on the same process has varying power needs. The AMD 65nm desktop chips use VERY LITTLE power, often kicking the butt of the core 2 duo, especially at idle.
If you really want to save power on a powerfull x86, you undervolt/underclock a 3600x2 65nm chip. At this point, you will worry much more about the power consumption of your Power Supply, Video Chipset and Hard Drive. As some have suggested, Plug in a large Flash memory device for files accessed but not updated regularly, spin down the HD after a time delay(HD's have a finite number of start ups), look for an efficient supply, and look at the newer AMD integrated video chipsets.(I think you will find these chips consume much less current than others)
As a longtime AMD user I think contacting AMD should yield results.
AMD will soon be bundling chipsets and CPU's. Linux users are not huge by volume, but they are a good part of the "technical group" that influence others. Forcing those people to become Intel adherents(the only open source alternative) is not a good business move for AMD.
First off, outside the US a substantial minority thinks the US is facist. You need to talk to people more when you travel.
Second, you made a nice stab at what facism is... the problem is "There is no generally agreed definition of fascism, and scholars continue to debate its nature vigorously, but it is associated with authoritarian government, extreme nationalism, collectivism, militarism, exaltation of the state, a corporatist economic system and traditionalist social and cultural policies. (wikipedia)"
Too many people would think this describes the Bush Administration quite well.
What? you think the military industrial/global entities that are driving this really care about what color the skin is of those who die? Not a chance.
The US got involved for "world domination"? No, it got involved because it is the most powerful country in the world, and is run almost totaly by money. This is ALL about money.
In case I sound like a left wing nut, I should mention that I view myself as a conservative, who just wants the USA returned to the people.
You think your prints were destroyed? I hope you are right, but, I fear they made it into some OTHER database somewhere before they were purged.
The US and UK are heading down the same highway on this one. The US is also putting ENORMOUS pressure on Canada to cave in. It seems that the Junior Bush is putting in place his fathers dream of a "new world order".
So with any luck the use of subliminal messages in advertising will remain an urban legend.... ha ha ha. They are already out there!
I work a lot in the gameing(gambling really, but we call it gameing) industry as a coder. The national/public news organization up in Canada has been ripping apart one or the provincial lottery organizations lately. In the investigation they found that some KONAMI slots were displaying subliminal messages. They were flashing winning hands. This affected 3 newer types of slots(If I remember correctly, and the Ontario Lottery Corp pulled them immediately).
Point is, some people already knew subliminal worked and were using it. Oh ya, want a laugh? Konami says it was just a bug in the code.
I will loose BIG mod points on this, and never recover.
BUT
Forget about Rob E. Is Taco seems an Apple fanboi or something? He seems to have a penchant for trolling with Anti-Linux articles. Cmon, we should tolerate this no better than Anti-Apple trolls. I don't want to see either.

Ya, I am not sure even that would solve his problems.
They always talk about the three pillers of success. Price, games and installed base. Supposedly you need two of the three to get any momentum in the third. So, if he could just get a KILLER game or two, maybe the price cut would pay off.
Right now they have none of the above strengths. Time will tell, they may have won the blueray fight at the expense of the console cash cow. If I had a choice, I would rather dominate the console market.
