    Someone had a causal theory that corruption was responsible for certain voting patterns. They invented a test that could perhaps falsify the theory. The test did not falsify the theory.

    Is it proved? No. But the correlation (failure to falsify) makes it a reasonable thing to believe unless/until it goes down to a better theory or a better test.

    Its not a problem with most projects. Its only a problem with projects like the kernel where the "or later version" clause is missing.

    It would be unusual to be among the last 5% of space tourists to fly before they lose one. Not particularly unusual to be in the last 20%. Hence, if you want a routine space visit where it would be unusual if you died, go for 39th or later.

    a fair auction isn't one where you pay the maximum price *YOU* would be prepared to pay for something... its where you pay the maximum price *THE NEXT HIGHEST BIDDER* would have payed for it.

    Shilled auctions DEFRAUD the bidder of the difference between those prices. Period.

    Oh and btw (not directed at parent poster...) shilling is NOT equivalent to setting a reserve price on an auction. Reserve prices are set before an auction starts and represent the lowest price the seller would be willing to sell for. Not the same thing AT ALL.

    No it doesn't. Thats not how science works. How it works is that *NON*-correlation equals *NON*-causation.

    Scientists try to falsify various theories by finding a NON-correlation with the observed facts. The thing is, climate scientists are failing to falsify the theory that we're causing the warming, and succeeding in falsifying all the competing theories.

    Except for "pirates" (or lack thereof).

    (BTW I'm pretty sure that the pirates theory could be shot out of the water too if somebody could be bothered to pay it -- ooohhh -- a few thousand times more attention than it deserves. The reason it doesn't deserve it is because nobody has proposed a plausible *mechanism* for the pirate die-off causing the warming. Other theories -- eg the sun warming up explaining it all -- *have* plausible mechanisms, *have* recieved attention, and AFAIK *have* been falsified to the satisfaction of the vast majority of scientists in the field).
