  2. Re:LOL on Hard Drive Makers Slash Warranties · · Score: 1

Oddly enough, I worked for WD tech support for a couple years in the mid '90s and I did plenty of advance exchanges (we send you a replacement drive, then you send the bad one back). It was always an option for RMAs. Also, Maxtor bought Quantum's hard drive business before they were bought by Seagate.

While I myself have had very few problems with WD drives (Samsung is the brand that doesn't like me) that doesn't change the main theme: Drives Break! Back Up Your Data!

  3. Re:No coop or multiplayer? on Review: Dragon Age: Origins · · Score: 1

We had plenty of fun playing Baldur's Gate II co-op, despite only one character being the story's main character. It was nice splitting up the duties of micro-managing combat and inventory management. It may not have saved us any time, but the jokes were well worth it.

There were three of us, so the main character's player also controlled the romance character. Then the other two fought over who got Minsc. :)

It's definitely not a necessary feature for a CRPG designed for single-player, but for some groups it can work just fine.

Back in the day I learned all sorts of things from library books while waiting for games to load on my Commodore 64. (Not to mention patience!)

Look for DS car chargers that are two parts, car->USB and USB->DS. I bought one when I got my DS Lite that has the above plus a DS->GBA plug. I haven't been able to find the exact one, but Amazon does list a few that are set up this way.

    Hope this helps.

  8. The Bitter End on When to Leave That First Tech Job · · Score: 1

Well, after about 4 years at my first programming job we started seeing the signs that the whole office was going to go. People had been trickling out before then; the final layoffs were a year later. They kept a few people on in the end. After all, when your company extensively uses a product, you should probably keep someone on to fix the bugs. (Duh!) One poor choice after another. :(

  9. Re:TeX for arbitrary layout (was Re:Future?) on Quark CEO Abruptly Resigns · · Score: 1

Sadly, Quark is only scriptable on the Mac and its AppleScript support has always been a little flaky.

InDesign's scripting support is very good; someone at Adobe is doing the right things there.

I wish MultiAd Creator's Windows scripting support was complete; its AppleScript support is near-flawless. (You can put some of the blame on me. :(
