I think that to sum up what the parent is saying, negative cultural traits have no place coming to America. In America, we believe in advancement of an egalitarian society. Burkas are rooted in the idea that women are worth less than men. In America, this is not considered moral or PC. In other countries, we have no say but in America it is more politically correct to condemn intolerance than to embrace it. That being said, we allow intolerance to a degree allowed by the Constitution. This means that on a day to day basis, burka wearing is legal but we will always have the right, as Americans, to judge it as decidely un-American just like we do the Klan, because both work against the society we want to build and yet so does disallowing their existence.

We want a better world than the immediancy of the jock having the new Nike sneakers the morning they came out.

    ...

People keep bringing up the ipod. The ipod STILL sucks. It's STILL lame compared to past and current mp3 players or even other formats. Yes, it sold like crazy. But that tells you more about the masses and the buyers of those products. The ipod didn't advance anything and to this day, still hasn't.

Wow.. so basically you are mad because people buy things they want and you think that you have some sort of higher knowledge on what they want? You really just went there and stated that "we" want a better world where people don't run out and buy things they want. Better yet, you even used a dumb jock analogy. It's like Slashdot has that facade of wanting absolute freedom and small (or no) government but what is actually meant is a world bending to their every whim. With posts like this, I don't even have to argue, I just have to quote.

Also the iPod still sucks according to the billions of dollars it made Apple alone, and the empire it built Apple in conjunction with their rebirth. Why does Slashdot love the free market so much? Why? I honestly really have seriously absolutely no fucking clue. It seems that at every turn a Slashdotter wants to just screech for their mommy to make the world work their way. Seriously, a ramble against jocks and Nikes when talking about a dream world in which everyone bends to their every whim? Are you gonna shoot up your school next or something? BTW those girls aren't any more likely to take you to prom because you are too edgy for an iPod.

Why is everyone so willfully ignorant to theft? By downloading media without paying for it, there is no tangible product that costs anyone any money except for bandwidth, but that is not what pisses off record companies. What pisses them off is that they release a product for sale with a value attached to it. This value factors in attempts at profits and attempts at covering the cost of production/paying the artist/etc. When music is illegally downloaded, the company loses money because someone now owns the song without paying for it. Now maybe that person wouldn't have paid in the first place and unlike shoplifting, there was no physical loss or diminishing of goods. However, the fact is that the person downloading the song is still taking something of value without purchasing it. This is theft. And media can have intrinsic value..it costs money to make good music and songs, money spent with the expectation of high returns in sales. If everyone downloads music, then the free market will indeed win as many Slashdotters smugly wish for, hoping to prove the things people make for them that they like aren't actually worth anything. However this free market win will be a ceasing of production for movies and songs..no one can profit so no need to fill the void.
