Er, I guess I drew the wrong conclusion when you said, "If this is how Yahoo sees it, they're missing the point."
I thought you meant that literally, as opposed to "this is what the author thinks that Yahoo thinks"...
I am still a little confused, but as long as I know what your original meaning was intended to be, and that it makes my statement rather irrelevant, I think it would be best if I stopped typing now!:)
It might be ridiculously polluted, but Opera has such a small market share, so why would the script kiddies, malware writers, and other malevolant netizens waste their time writing things for it if they can just prey on the (generally more ignorant) majority browser user?
I'd wager it won't take very long, unless they intergrate the social network into their already existing Yahoo! Groups...
They bought the companies... I think it's a lot more straightforward/honest to change the name.
Yahoo! is not a holding company or anything, they are in a brand war with Google, they need to get their name out there, it's just good business.
===
I don't want to make any inferences, so I will just ask... do you think that it is at all questionable that Yahoo buys these companies and changes the name?
What you see there is the Public Relations Friendly(tm) version of the advertising plan you speak of...
When making a statement about such an acquisition, you don't say "The very clever thing about social software is that we can sell advertising at higher rates because we can tailor the ads to the market and promise more responsive viewing."
It's not that they are missing the point, it's that it doesn't sound very good to come out and say something that sounds so self-centered.
I said nothing but that it is ethically questionable. I don't recall saying that they should be stopped, nor do I remember crying about freedoms being infringed.
I was pointing out the fact they are a company, it seems obvious to you or me, however, some people seem to think they are the second coming.
===
They are not breaking the law, doing what they are doing, while I wouldn't do it and think that it is only a sign of future problems... if they want to do it, that's their business (pun not intended)...
I've said it before, I'll say it again. Google is a company. They are out to make a profit.
Companies grow from profit, Google has grown a lot. To maintain growth percentages (which as you become gi-normous like Google, becomes harder to do)... you need to branch out and you may also do things that may be questionable.
I think that paid search priority is somewhat ethically questionable, but I am not at all surprised.
Given that Google has been taking efforts to make themselves appear even more friendly to the open source community (those huge contributions awhile back)... I think with enough contact/interest from people in the community that Google may become interested in sharing these algorithms (good public relations never hurt)...
Who knows, though?
===
However, Google doing things that are questionable and quite publically, in my opinion, spin a dangerous message for the future. They may be progressing into a more pervasive position than Microsoft in the years to come, with increased power comes increased corruption.
Gee, it is happening in Europe, too, it must be that huge block of fundamentally Christian Europeans, right?

Politics are, sadly, about control. We give up control for security. There comes a point where people must decide how much control they are willing to give up.
Screaming, yelling, and blaming things on particular parties does nothing. It isn't a particular party. They ALL want control.
Don't get me wrong, politicians aren't just doing it for themselves (well, not all of them)... some of them are just trying to do what they think is best for the people. Most of them, however, are just out to get what they can.
===
Problems don't just materialize in a year or two... and the bigger problems generally take a decade or more and have their roots in many places.
These are just general comments on the subject of politics and our rights. I am of the opinion that most people are content to buy the party line (whichever side they decide to buy) without considering history, economy, culture, and plain old human nature.
I think this is a great idea, even beyond medicine.
Knowledge of these medical traditions can give great insight the cultures they originated from (I say this since they are obviously not the current culture, though they might be cultural anscestors)....
I'd love to see more movements like this, not just medicine, but traditional stories and the like, as well.
Infant mortality rates and the death rates of mothers were also higher before.
Do you have to suffer to make things more meaningful? Technology, including anesthesological technology, is usually developed to make our lives more enjoyable. This is off topic, but I think by looking down on anyone who has had an epidural because they didn't endure the great pain of childbirth at home... is like looking down on people with electricity because they don't burn candles for light.
===
Uh, how to make this on topic, uhh... oh yeah, technology is usually developed to make our lives more enjoyable... but sometimes... the Canadian transportation people come in and try to put crazy devices in cars... and ruin everyone's lives!
God forbid you ever have a wife who becomes pregnant... and carries the baby to term... and you have to speed to the hospital...... I WISH I COULD GO FASTER HONEY, BUT THE CANADIAN SPEED NAZIS HAVE RUINED MY LIFE!
Well, the tower isn't what does it, it is the Earthquake Machine stored in the basement (owned by the United States, of course) that is really behind it.

Aye, we definately need that... perhaps with some open electrode that actually SHOCKS you if you don't heed the alarm, too... it'd be helpful for those of us who uncontrollably procrastinate!
Yeah, no kidding, "finding out" that love might be just another biological response is almost as bad as George Lucas pulling the whole "midichlorian" concept out to explain how jedis get their powers! Yech!

That'll teach me to browse Slashdot in the wee hours of the morning.

Wait, it still is.
Drat.
Thanks for pointing that out, though
You'll see all of them around 1, 0, and -1.
For some reason... there is a tendency for anything that isn't directly supporting Google to get modded down.
This includes relevant points.

So for the most part, unless you have something against Google to say, you're pretty much 'preaching to the converted'...
Cheers!

Scary stuff!
It is an interesting find, however, I must say that my interest would be greatly heightened if there was an actual picture of what they found.

Act before you complain.

A friend of mine made a post on our IRL pals forum that I thought I'd share...
"""
Lets be fair here - i'm no fanboy, but even I have to admit its not just Microsoft.
Sega Genisis - Crashes games
SNES - at launch batteries were being drained faster from cartidge then supposed to (not sure what this means)
N64 - At launch wouldn't read some cartridges
PSOne - Wouldn't read some games, laser would lways fall out of alignment, and system would overheat
Dreamcast - Overheating
PS2 - Scratch the hell out of people's DVD Movies as well as some games, majority of systems at launch would overheat
XBox - Overheating problems on some systems
XBox 360 - CPU not functional, overheating, scratching disks
