  1. Re:What happens if... on Decoy Files on P2P Sites Become Ad Vehicles · · Score: 1, Insightful
Here we have a file that is 8min long, and another that is 1 hour long (or if there is no "length" category, they will see one is 10mb and one is 700mb) and come to the realization that "hmmm...I was searching for a full lenght concert.

What prevents them from putting more advertisement/garbage after those 8 minutes ? I've heard MP3s with only the refrain playing in a loop for like 4 minutes. ... And correct me if i'm wrong but I think I have seen somewhere that they had found a way to artificially inflate the number of seeds for a torrent by using rogue torrent servers or something like that.

They have to remember, not everyone is a moron ... Now if they want to put the whole concert on the p2p site, but include maybe some advertisements in it like "Pick up Jay-Z's latest album "" now at Tower Records" and then saying that it is a free download, I think you might have something there. But if you give people a teaser when they think they are already breaking the law, but don't care, they are just going to either a) ignore it and download the pirated version, or b) watch it and say, that was great, but I'd really like to see how it ends, better find the full length version"

I think you're right. But they know very much that not everyone is a moron. Think about it, what are they losing in the process ? They're thinking like spammers. If only one pirate chooses to buy the whole concert, they've won. They know they piss you off by making you download an advertisement (and waste your precious bandwidth) and they'll keep pissing you off until you've had enough and either
    a) you buy their product or
    b) you stop downloading illegal stuff

They have learned well. You have to agree that it's clever ! They're using the pirates own weapon against them.

duh ! What about security ?
Anybody can steal his tape, listen to it, type the code and there it is, you just lost millions cause somebody stole your revolutionnary software! He should learn a language that nobody understands like ancient greek or simply invent a new language. THEN he can record his code on audio tape !

Seriously. If he's talking about storing code, he should use some kind of CVS like Subversion. If he's talking about code maintainability/reusability, he should learn about the Object Oriented Programming principles, the design patterns, etc... This is the kind of stuff you learn at universities, though it can be self-taught. For some people, it can take the fun out of programming. Be ready to invest a lot of time going through books and websites to learn about that...

Yeah right ! They're probably the company's greatest asset. What would they sell if there were nobody sweating in the shop producing whatever it is the sales department needs to sell ? What would they sell if nobody had designed the said product beforehand ? Who would buy it if it wasn't for the marketing dept. ?
Even the janitor has his role in the company. This is a joint effort. It makes me sick to hear someone blabbering about his own importance/indispensibility in the company.

I really hope your comment was meant to be ironic/sarcastic !

  5. Re:Um doesn't WinXP append metadata on Metadata in Vista Could Be Too Helpful · · Score: 0

NTFS Has had that feature since at least WinNT 4.
I remember adding streams to files by appending :streamname at the end of filenames. The problem is that it never really caught up. Not much tools have been made to manipulate this metadata so I guess they only made the feature more usable in Vista...

    Try it.
create a file named something like test.txt and then:
    echo "this is a test" > test.txt:newstream
    more test.txt:newstream

I think the new stream itself cannot be deleted (not with standard windows tools anyway). You can only delete the file. You can add a stream to a directory too. May I suggest that you don't add one to your root directory since you won't be able to delete it afterward.
I suppose that XML data could be appended to any file to duplicate the XMP (embedded xml) functionality from Adobe.

    I'm a developper, I wouldn't say no to that !
Since in your case there won't be a de-facto standard platform, software companies will either have to develop their software for many platforms or stick to one and let their competitor develop the same solution for the other platforms.
Should be good for the economy.

I think that the simple fact that you don't need an angry god to tell you what to do with your life is a sign that you don't actually need religion. IMHO, religion is a lubricant. It's there to ease the absorbtion of common good sense into your brain. Some people just can't grasp the concept of why you can't kill people but, if you tell them they will burn in hell for doing it, it makes it easier to understand. Religion is not a bad thing in itself, it's like gun powder. Gun powder has been invented for fireworks, but they found a way to make weapons out of it.
