    You're mad.
DB2 was the first relational database (although it didn't have a name back then).
It was also the genesis of SQL.

So I fail to see how they can be "to late" in any way shape or form.

The DB2 database has been free (beer) for years for developers only.

This marks a step in that developers are now allowed to redistribute the database.

Do you actually know anything about enterprise scale relational databases, or are you just making this stuff up?

Actually, some algorithms depend on this behavior. For example, the Quantum Factorization algorithm uses this behavior to resolve one of the registers in the calculation, the other register contains only probability waveforms that are consistent with the value read in from the first register.

Actually DB2 has had recursion for a while.

And SQL procedures can do pretty much anything, including maintaining local parameters, calling external programs, accepting parameters and returning results.

The fact that SQL has set operations like union and intersection is an added benefit, not a downside.

That's not entirly accurate. With stereoscopic vision, you can determine, for example, that those stars are much further away than a little light, nearby. So stereoscopic vision works at those distances, it just doesn't allow you to distinguish the distances of a couple of stars, for example.

  18. Re:Um... on How Microsoft Takes a Name · · Score: 1
There really are two sides to this:
    1. Windows is a trademark, and he should have known better than to use a trademark owned by a giant company in the same market.
    2. Windows should not be a legally protected trademark, since it was commonly used at the time they trademarked it. IIRC one company objected to the trademark at the time, and was bought out (settlement style) by MS.

So sure, perhaps he felt that he could use the name, but he should have expected hell in the courts. In the end he decided not to fight, but it does show that money matters. If the company was much smaller, they wouldn't be able to defend the trademark.

I've been recommending Mac to everyone for a while now. Windows is a PITA. I can't wait to go to PS/3 w/Linux. If the price point is good enough I'll be recommending that to everyone.

Many (most?) authors are supporting Google in this.

The resistance comes from the publishers, who either feel that they have to prevent a precedent, or are being pressured by other entites with a vested interest in "protection copyrights".

Once a work is in digital form, it may not only be copied perfectly, but it may also be easily modified. It's easy for us to stand back and say there is vastly more benefit than downside. They won't see our side for a long time
