  2. hd video compression quality sucks bilge water on No Love For The Blu-Ray · · Score: 1

Instead of using the increased bandwidth available on the media, the blu-ray discs I've bought and viewed are the same transfers as broadcast in HD on Showtime and HBO and exhibit exactly the same "color banding" in exactly the same scenes. Even "Superman Returns" has occasional color banding even though it's supposed to be the first 50GB blu-ray disc! And on a 55" screen, it's pretty distracting/obnoxious when you see it.

IMO, this parallels the same fucked up compression debacle during DVD's first years. Eventually the video compression companies will have better compression algorithms and we'll get the blu-ray equivalent of "superbit." However, I'm not so sure that I'll continue to buy blu-ray discs until that day arrives because I don't want to encourage or reward the laziness of the industry.

Nonsense, said major network can broadcast six SD digital sub-channels on the channel that used to show one analog channel. All they would need to do is buy the digital encoders and convert their analog transmitter to digital with a conversion kit from the transmitter manufacturer. Now they have the possibility of bringing in six times the ad revenue.

I just bought the Panasonic DMP-BD10 from Crutchfield and got it two weeks ago. The single layer disc releases show the exact same artifacting as the 1080i broadcast versions do. It's clearly obvious that they're not re-encoding to use less compression and show off the format; rather, they're using the broadcast versions compressed to fit in a 6-MHz bandwidth, which look good if there's not too much motion (like a field of grass or leaves on a tree in the wind) and no sunsets (or other light-to-dark gradients). And although I've not done an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray side-by-side comparison, I'd guess they're using the same bit streams for both formats to save costs rather than spend money showing off how much better each format is than the other!

Microsoft says that you can reactivate Windows as many times as you want. To do this I believe that XP creates a "checksum" of your hardware and sends it to Microsoft when you activate. You can format and reinstall and reactivate Windows to your heart's content. But replace some hardware and your "checksum" won't match and you'll be forced to spend at least ten minutes on the phone with some outsourced person in some foreign country groveling for a new activation key. Bill has probably outfitted all those foreign call-centers with voice stress analyzers so that they'll know when your lying about not installing it on more than one machine.

I just bought the new Panasonic Blu-Ray player and it came with a free "Eight Below" and an offer for another two by mail "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "The Great Raid". I received the mail movies in less than a week. I also purchased "Stargate," "Sky Captain," and the first two Terminators. My only complaint is that the compression sucks on all these discs. There is a "color banding" or "posterization" effect on scenes with sunsets and is seen at it's worst on the "Sky Captain" BD where Sky Captain's plane plows into the ocean. This "effect" only happens occasionally, but when it does it's really, really distracting and annoying.

Granted all these discs are single layer BD discs. I was really expecting to see them releasing dual layer discs with a whole lot less compression. I am viewing these discs at 1080p over an HDMI cable on a Mitsubishi WD-57831 and I have used the THX video tests on the discs to adjust the display to where I can barely see macroblocking in the sky scenes in "Eight Below".

Well, DVD started out with the same kind of incorrectly compressed releases and it took time for "Superbit" discs to arrive. Properly mastered DVDs look fantastic on this player when upconverted to 1080p.
