Seeing as OSX will only run on macs that you have to buy from apple, and that apple makes their money off of hardware, not requiring software activation doesn't really say much.
Like we've said over and over and over and over and over and over......and over again, MSFT is not profiting off this. They're ending up spending a lot more money sueing Mr. Spamalizer than they make.
If you ask me, I don't really see how this works. I suppose you could control web content on IE, but that's about it... It's already possible to keep other people from viewing restricted folders (file permissions/ownership). Joe Sixpack probably isn't smart enough to secure his box anyway. You'd be suprised how many Windows users don't realize that there's an administrator account available when you reboot in safe mode. Yay, your Windows box is now own3d.
1) We use languages like C/C++ primarily for speed. Why aren't we using the high level languages for our applications thus making the scripting/macro language infinitely powerful since it can reprogram any level including the engine itself (i.e. more like the Lisp philosophy of application design).
Anyone want to try writing a decent operating system in pure assembly code?
Although its always nice to see that our favorite browser is gaining market share, these trends may very well be temporary. We should be careful not to get overconfident, nor should we underestimate Microsoft's ability to squash competition (not always through innovation). They managed to exterminate Netscape, they could be able to kill off Firefox too. I seriously doubt that firefox will ever hold the majority of the market, as Microsoft insists on bundling IE and making it "a neccessary component of the operating system"
the same geeks and early adoptors that use Linux are usually game nutcases as well
Well, as it turns out, most of the consumers are still ordinary Joe Jrs. Good luck trying to convert them to linux. You might have to explain what linux is first too.
sigh... PearPC is an emulator, how much more simple can it get? If you haven't installed SP2, then you really should, besides fixing security problems, it adds a pop-up blocker to IE.

4-year-old beige built-from-parts machine. What's wrong with beige?
What makes you think MS even cares about the $7 million?
MOD PARENT FUNNY

Why would MSFT have a linux lab?
Mod parent troll. I've never had xp crash, and i don't see how OSX is more user friendly than Windows. At best, I'd say they're about the same.
Troll... If Microsoft manufactured their own hardware and locked Windows to it, they'd probably have gone out of business ages ago.
Lets see... well, then they should stop being a fucking hardware company!
...and what do these parental controls do?
What's wrong with that? Proprietary software written for propritary hardware goes against the principles of OSS if you ask me.

Are we even sure he was murdered for being a spammer?
If you're chipping in the cash to put 2GB RAM on every PC you own, why not pay a little more and put in 4GB (more if you have an x86-64 system)
Um, he's running Slackware on the 10 year old PC... Read the article, as it looks like you're even newer here than I am.
Except that running OS X on an 8 year old mac may be comparable to running WinXP on an 8 year old PC?
Funny, I have a Win98 box too, it never gets hacked, virused, or spywared. Although it does seem to BSoD a lot more often then WinXP.

See subject
Um, maybe because you were running it in an emulator?
Am I the only one who did a double take with the words: "Linux" and "ease"?
This makes it seem unlikely, very unlikely.
