Strange this announcement should come after Google finally confirms the construction of their Wallet System. With all the hype built up around that project over the past few days, and the negative outlash towards Ebay during that time, its interesting they now announce their 'open source' release to the community.
It seems this kind of collaboration, in a lot of ways, will allow people to bypass having to launch a browser and use our favorite search engine to find the information they are looking for. Granted, its only from one resource right now, but for the masses, in most cases, they'd probably be pretty happy with that. Cutting down on the time spent trying to find relevant google results alone is a huge bonus, as many out there have trouble properly narrowing down their searches to begin with.
With the talent behind Google, and the online prescence of Amazon, there is no doubt they can eventually overtake Ebay as the popular option for the masses.
Going to an online store to purchase or sell items, require more than simply turning on a PC running Windows. The market is already somewhat ahead of the game in their knowledge and willingness to try something new. As such, they are that much more open to new options, should they be saturated with those options when it comes to marketing.
As long as Microsoft has the money to throw at new projects, it will be a VERY long time before it looses any significant market share. All the new and inovative technologies coming out to compete with Microsoft, are either later copied by them, or bought out by them. And when 95+% already uses MS and doesn't care about alternatives, they'll stick with them when it comes to new technologies.
When it comes right down to it, every company can use some pretty "impressive" looking stats to swing things in their favor. This is no different.
The aotumotive industry is the worst, every possible car on the market seems to have some obscure award it has won to help tout its abilities. In the end, its whatever fits your current needs/situation, ignore the hyped up stats.
Although Microsoft is indeed most likely using this as a smear campaign against bittorrent, would a tool such as this, backed by Microsoft, confirmed to be only for "legal" uses, not be a usefull tool for large corporations and businesses? A business that can obviously not allow bittorrent on their corporate networks might find a use for a Microsoft backed solution, especially assuming integration into their current Windows Architecture would be "simple"
