When you're connecting to 5-10 people at a time, and are always seeing those speeds, then you start to see the benefit. It's easy to back up a server over a gigabit link, but try getting on-demand content from students all over the country.

Intra-campus you could see full 100mbit between machines, going offcampus 1mbit wasn't that unusual and sometimes much higher during non-peak hours. Like anything, it really depended on which school you were connecting to and how congested the network was when you were trying to pull.

Does this mean I get a refund on my VIP membership? ;) Seriously though, I2hub was an awesome project while it lasted. The whole point of this network was to bring together college students using highspeed networks. While some students chose to share copyrighted files, a lot of others uses I2hub for legitimate and semi-scholarly purposes. I can't tell you how many times I've helped kids with their C++ and Java questions, found good game competitors, and reconnected with old friends. The whole point of the I2 network is to see what researchers and academics can do with large amounts of bandwidth. I2hub certainly explored that question. So... what's next?

  4. Real Story - SAP implementation fails miserably on Unreliable Linux Dumped from Crest Electronics · · Score: 5, Informative

"The Best Run Businesses Run SAP" is a true statement... SAP says it over and over again. What they're really stating is that only the best run businesses can survive a SAP implementation, the rest run out of money or patience, or worse, end up being driven out of business by the enormous cost and disruption it causes. SAP has a HORRIBLE track record on linux. They claim support for linux and other non-MS platforms, but that's only for their core products. Everything outside of CRM and R3 is riddled with technotes and disclaimers about needing MSSQL and WINDOWS. They don't really write cross-platform systems, they just make claims and back them up with fine-print disclaimers.

I just left a company that was $10M and 2 years behind on their "$2M" SAP implementation. It's a joke. Once SAP gets their foot in the door, they flood your company with incompetent consultants and rebuild your business around SAP-approved procedures and architecture. At the end of this clusterfuck you end up WAY over budget and desperately looking for a scape goat. Clearly Crest Electronics chose Linux.

SAP products require patch after patch, and take MONTHS to really install. We had a team of engineers working around the clock (literally) for 5 months to get our base systems set up to SAP specs. Even then we would receive "mystery" patches, frequently resulting in system crashes as they weren't designed to work with other patches. Bottom line - SAP is the problem. They churn out highly unstable software and have armies of consultants who will sweep problems like this under the carpet or find something else to blame.

I did this a 6 months ago with 10x250 GB IDE drives. It's a bit of a cabling nightmare, but with a dremel, drill, and some determination, I crafted a 5x2 "plane" setup. As the article points out, cooling is a major factor. The 4 fans I slapped on the front of the array keep it at a very nice 80 degrees year round. I haven't had a disk die yet, but I've got spares sitting in shrink wrap just incase.

For some people, it's great to be able to notify others instantly, they probably don't know how to check 2 mail accounts. We expect them to want to know this, so start with an NDA and then take them through the whole horse and pony show. I haven't found anyone that thought it was strange, and only one person actually read it. We aren't trying to steal them away from competition through a non-compete, but provide our company with legal recourse if we found them mirroring our business. I can't say enough about dante. It works well with M$ proxy server. The only problem is the authentication to it, which Microsoft has severely altered so that it isn't really Socks5 any more. What you do is get a 98 box /w proxy client on it, stick one of those cheap Socks 5 proxy servers on it, and then go to it as the proxy. Not pretty, but it works. Dante will act as a wrapper to your programs, so stuff like telnet and ftp will run just fine. I lived at a school that had a hellish NT setup and was elated to find out that I could actually get some work done. E-mail me with questions.

  22. Development can occur on any platform on Why Develop On Linux? · · Score: 4

Where I work our developers use windows boxes because that interface is simple for them. They write the code under cygwin and compile with GCC. They can take their code wherever they want since they use a standard compiler. It's not about forcing an OS on people, it's getting them to use tools that will port easily. If they used visual studio or some other propriatary tool it would make things a hell of a lot more complex. The software that they write actually runs on Sun boxes with solaris 7. If you want to push Linux, push GCC. Once they can port their code they will be a lot happier to hear about what else they can do in Linux. I have found that they are most interested in A) a good text editor (emacs or vi) B) Good windowing interface C) ability to display video output from their apps (remote X session or local execution) If that all works fairly simply, I don't think they care a whole lot about what they are actually using.

It makes a lot of sense to design the site first, then add the text. This way you can change the look on the fly and not have to touch the pages in each language. As far as a splash screen for people in different national TLD's, it might be nice to pre-design a few for common countries, welcoming them and asking them which language they would like to procede in. That would not be a problem for updating, but imagine having to touch each one to add a nav bar or something? Ack! If international componants are needed they can be added with an international variable, like a table with region-specific symbols. If there is no need for that componant, then nothing will get inserted and it just won't appear.

Teachers are NOT using computers at all in the classrooms, and rarely for homework. We have an opional laptop program now, and the students who have bought them use them as desktops. I have never seen one in a class. I am glad that I am leaving before I would be forced to buy one. I realize that it will take time to use them fully, but to REQUIRE them when teachers won't use them, and say that they have no need for them? WHY?!?!
