is there any way that web users could collaborate to create a map which would streamline search and rescue operations? there is a huge amount of information posted about trapped victims...could web users work together to crunch it all so that by morning rescue workers can have a clearer picture of where to start?

"..we have to work to make sure that that it supports the sort of society that we want to build on top of it..." amen to that! our problems as a race are not technological, they are existential, and I am really glad to see that the web is finally starting to reflect that. its as if the search-stream gods are finally comfortable with virtuality. finally it's okay just to put an idea on the web, and expect that if its good enough, that idea can stand on its own. from ideapark.org-- "we have been so busy building up the Internet with pseudo-edifices in the grand style of Olde Commerce--virtual banks, virtual universities, virtual shopping malls--that we have completely forgotten to ask ourselves whether that musty old economic model is really worth replicating in the Dream Land that is the Internet. It's time for us to wake up, and quit taking the math test over and over again."

tearing down barriers is not always good. some of these hacks are used by pornographers to phish for whoever (including kids) by evading familiy filters etc. I found a hack (a word) that will return zero results for legitimate sites but about 5,000 related to highly unnatural acts. if you are in google, you are one word away from reading the site descriptions of these sites. kind of makes you think twice about whether it's ever safe to hit the "im feeling lucky" button.

we need more incentives to keep 1. girls interested in science, esp. physics and 2. people of all ages interested in anticipatory design science and knowledge creation. "school" as we know it now is a place where lots of very smart people get teased for the way their brain naturally works...or get ridiculed for not being pretty or popular. homeschooling is an option that can work pretty beautifully when like-minded parents team up to keep their kids curious & challenged and "in the loop" with other kids, homeschooled and otherwise. I know some incredibly bright and mature homeschooled kids. sure its a big step but if I had a daughter who was going through what I went through in public school, I don't think I would hesitate to homeschool her. Public school is more like a shark pool than people acknowledge, I think.

this came from one of my readers recently who said she was taking up this campaign to honor of a loved one who died as a result of domestic violence. btw the asterix in the note below is the equivalent of two fairly ordinary, decent, straight-out-of the schoolroom words. when they are typed into google as one word, the returns are pure Yuck from a parental standpoint. - an open letter to AOL June 2005 Dear sir or madam, Please search on the word * in the AOL browser and take note of the results. Are you aware that this kind of content was being made accessible to AOL users? I am a writer and web developer who has spent the past six years trying to make sense of human interaction on the web. If this is the direction the Internet is leading us, I almost want to go get a job washing cars instead. On the side, I could hand out flyers that said "Parents! Be sure to keep your kids off the Internet!" Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
