There is a Settlers of Catan card game that is 2-player, my wife and I play frequently. I've never actually played the board game, but it's on my list to acquire some time soon (right below Tigris and Euphrates).

My personal favorite board game is probably Carcassonne.

I think you represent a market that the Wii is posed to really dominate in: the 2nd console in the house. It's pretty darn expensive to get a PS3 and a 360, but the Wii is cheap enough that many people might get it as a second console.

  4. Re:Hooray! on Tolkien Enterprises To Film Hobbit With Jackson? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I really thought that the Faramir part of the movie was very poorly done. I can understand wanting to make Faramir more of an obstacle than the free pass that he was, but they did it so horribly that I think it was the wrong call. Faramir's 'conversion' just didn't work. I mean Frodo almost hands the ring over to the Chief Nazgul and this somehow convinces Faramir that he's the right person to try to take the ring straight into Mordor? Now, if he had cold-cocked Frodo and handed the ring off to Sam I might have believed it.

However, on the whole I think PJ did a darn good job with the books and I want to see him do the Hobbit. It may have been written as a childrens book, but there is so much of a dark side to it that I think it could actually be a much darker and scarier movie than LOTR. It will be interesting to see how they handle the elves in that one, since they aren't exactly the good guys.

The idea that it is illegal to copy the software from the CD to your computer (aka install it) is the entire basis for EULAs. I don't know if that has ever been challenged in court yet, but probably not.

Anything that calls inself a license is supposed to be giving you the right to do something that would be otherwise illegal. In this case, it's copying the software from CD to Hard Drive.

"He really did break the law?" I don't think so, but I'm not qualified to make that statement and neither are you. It takes a judge or a jury to say that. To me, it doesn't appear that he conspired to do any such thing. He simply wanted to public to realize how insecure it really was. It sounds like this law requires such intent. There is also the question of whether Northwest Airlines would be considered a Government agency or department for the purposes of this law.

IANAL (big suprise), but the judge still had discretion over the actual penalty. He could have just issued a big fine and said 'good luck collecting from them', but he instead went for a more severe approach. Spamhaus not showing up was incredibly stupid and probably got the judge a little be upset and partially caused the severity of the penalty.

Just to be technical about it. He did decide the motion (No to IBM's partial summary judgement), but said they should feel free to try again once discovery is completed, and implied that he would probably grant it then unless SCO finds some real honest to God evidence. He pretty much gave SCO the benefit of a very large doubt that they might finally find something, which is pretty much what he is supposed to do on a Summary Judgement Order.

Any bets as to how much more SCO will try to stall discovery now?

You are not using the term evolution in the same sense that it is generally used. You are using it as a word describing observable changes in present day biology. That is valid, but not how the word is usually understood.

As an explanation for the origin of life, Evolution is just as much a myth as Creationism and Intelligent Design. None of them can be testeed (barring the invention of a time machine) so therefore none of them can be falsified.

The article doesn't exactly state that. It says: And so far, the Tweel is no lighter than the tire and wheel it replaces.

That could mean it is heavier. But I take it to mean it's in the same general ballpark. Keep in mind this is also replacing the wheel assembly with lighter materials. Also, under sufficient presure, air can get pretty heavy.

The article does mention that these can be re-treaded. If that is reasonably effective and economical then that could result in significant long term savings.

The article itself does say that regular cars aren't the anticipated first use. I can definitely see the military taking a big interest in these.

I occasionally use a variant on keyboard patterns. I just shift my fingers right one key and re-type my username (in lower case). I don't use it for important things (or /.), but it's not bad. It would even work with childrens names, sports team names, and so forth. Of course, it does require that you be a competent typist.

I'm also a fan of taking a number and spelling out two or more of the digits. 2004 could be two00four or something. Simple to remember, not too easy to guess and usually a decent length.

I think the best way to get users to use strong passwords is to not say anything about security and authentication and all that and try to get them to make a game out of it. I can see the slogan now "Time to change your password, which could be the most fun you'll have all day in your pathetic little dead end job!" (Some truth to that in many cases).
