  1. Re:You think the housing collapse was bad on US Student Loans Exceed $1 Trillion · · Score: 2

you cant just walk away from a student loan like you can a house.

You have to declare bankrupcy & be able to show 'undue hardship'.

This of course turns the students into indentured servants to the banks or government, but let's not worry about the young. After all, we all know it is the baby boomers who really matter

Err... bankruptcy does not eliminates one's student loan debts. You can't bankrupt your way out of it, even if you prove 'undue hardship' (as it is typically understood). The only way to get out is if - God forbids - you get permanently disabled or some other horrific event of that magnitude.

    Not according to CNN

"There's a mythology that private student loans can't be discharged. But sometimes they can and should," says Kantrowitz.

To get your student loans discharged, you must file an undue hardship petition. To qualify, you have to satisfy three conditions: First, you must not be able to repay your student loan and also maintain a minimal standard of living based on your income and your expenses. Second, your situation must likely persist for a significant portion of the repayment period of the loan. Finally, you must have made good faith efforts to repay the loans.

The good being stolen here are not the lines of code, you are correct.

However, what copyright grants is the exclusivity to distribute. This is effectively stolen since whenever someone copies the stuff without your consent, you do not have the exclusivity anymore.

So, no, the lines of code were not stolen. But the excusivity to distribute was.

Misusing legal terms fro emotional appeal is the sort of thing Iran does, where it describes people who convert to Christianity as rapists, etc. just to feel good about punishing them. In free western countries we don't want "it is effectively theft", or "converting from slam is effectively rape", we want set crimes and laws that are defined in law books.

GPS is great, sure, but IIRC Galileo isn't compatible without devices being modified to also accept Galileo signals. So this project is going to cost quite a bit of money in re-engineering and replacement costs for devices to use the new system in addition to GPS.

I don't buy that the stated purpose for the system (independence from the US's military) is very credible, given that the US is, you know, part of NATO and whatnot. And if the EU does turn hostile to the US in some sort of bizarro-world, the US possesses capabilities to shoot them down. So it doesn't make a lot of sense along those lines.

The improved technical features of Galileo over GPS, though, are quite nice.

It will be very useful to the Muslims when they take over Europe, however.
