    Here in Athens Greece we are in a transitional stage where most of the city have only digital but for some few places the analog signal still exists; few day ago i was watching a football game (the real one, where they play with the ball mostly with the... foot!) in a friend's house located in a neighborhood with both signals available where my friend's tv was tuned in digital and a neighbor watching the same game was tuned in analog - we kept hearing that neighbor cheer or boo almost a minute before we could see in our tv the reason, totaly destroying our experience (by the way, we soon understood that he was supporting the opposite team - they lost, we won!).

    Its even worse than that. If you have two digital TVs of different brands there is a slight difference in the time taken to decode. So if you have a TV in the kitchen with the same program as you are watching in the lounge you get an annoying "echo" effect

    I tried various searches in a normal browser window and an incognito window. There was really very little difference. Searching for "Laptop" swapped the order of amazon and curries. Searching for Islam had three appeasement sites at the top in my search and five in the incognito search. Searching for "BP" was exactly the same.

    Zerocoin is an extension to Bitcoin. It has been implemented in some altcoin(s) already IIRC.

    I'm not too keen on the detais, but if I remember correctly you had to explicitly specify that you wanted to "hide" a transaction when making a zero-coin transaction. That and I think the "hidden" transactions incurred quite a computational and storage cost on the blockchain.

    You missed one key word. From zerocoin.org:

    Zerocoin is a proposed extension to the Bitcoin payment network.

    In many countries, it's illegal to make paper money transactions over a certain amount of money.

    Really? Where? I know that some countries there are limits on taking money in and out, and in most countries large withdrawals and deposits from banks are reported, but where is it illegal to pay by paper money over a certain amount?

    This is a great example of where copyright helps to encourage authors to write more. The fact that this copy has been leaked, and pirated massively means that Salinger has no incentive to write any more! We need to punish the perpetrators thoroughly.

    I think his death in 2010 is probably a bit of a disincentive too.

    Wasn't there an article here earlier about how it's not so difficult as earlier imagined to track inputs and output of Tor and connect them to the person using it?

    I think that this type of traffic analysis becomes harder as more people use it. The other weakness is if someone controls a large number of exit nodes - if routesr etc all could act as exit nodes it would be safer .... unless someone had a backdoor into the routers!!!

    A colleague who cycles everywhere (even in the snow - he's insane) says "Never use a backpack for something heavy. If the weight shifts it will pull you off track. Use panniers instead and you can carry loads of heavy stuff without problems"

    I have 2 reusable bags, but I almost always forget to take them with me anywhere. I used one last week, but that was the first time in months.

    Its not just me then. The thing is I have about 20 reusable bags - I keep buying one to keep in the car .... take it into the house full of groceries and there it stays.

    Is it just me that's struggling to see how a 'solution' is to charge people more for something they already use? Surely we aren't going to stop using them because we get a charge added on, more likely we'll get more frustrated at the cost of the groceries bought since our total bill is higher because of the bag-tax.

    The idea is that people will switch to reusable bags and bring them to the supermarket.

    Isn't there a better solution, different chemicals used in the bag 'technology', alternatives (The USA used paper bags for many years, why is that such a bad solution?)

    Paper bags are hard to hold from the top and can't stand getting wet. Try carrying half-a dozen paper bags to the bust stop in the rain and you will see why they don't work so well in Europe.

    Paper bags.

    For most Americans this is hard to visualise but many Europeans walk to the supermarket. The bag has to be carry-able with handles, survive getting wet, and support a reasonable amount of weight.

    Supermarkets already charge for plastic bags in England.

    Some do, mostly "low cost" stores - not Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's or any of the major supermarkets I know of
