I thought I was a majority of one on this issue.

I have had the same problem with Debian. After reading post after post about how great the Debian dist was. I could never get X to work either. I tried installing on multiple machines with the same problem on all of them and finally just gave up and went back to SuSE which works fine for me.

I have since installed Red Hat and OpenNA with no problems.

  3. What about all the ISP's running thier RH 7.3 on Red Hat Linux Support To End · · Score: 1

I have RH 9 and 7.3 at home mainly because my ISPs have without exception RH7.3 running on all the websites that I support. I use RH9 for my workstation and 7.3 for my intranet file and webserver to test applications and sites .

I am confused as to how this is going to affect me and what I should do. I rely heavily on the updates from RHN for both 7.3 and 9.0.

But now I realize I will need to change my home setups now. I have used FBSD before and like it very much as the server to replace 7.3 and I guess I will finally give SuSe a whirl for my workstation or go back to Mandrake.

Emails to my ISP's have not returned any answers yet as to what they will be doing. If I thought they were going to RHEnterprise, I might be tempted to move to Fedora. I am at a loss. Has anyone else heard from their ISP about plans to migrate or options? I'm not worried about my workstation, I'll try anything, but I would like to have a similar server to test on before sending files off to my remote sites.

Most of my clients are very small companies who can not afford a full time IP or even a full time webmaster. They depend on me for something simple and stable. I have, in the past recommended RH for thier ISP servers and Macs or Linux for thier office computers depending on how PC-wise they were.

Is RH for the small person/company such as myself or has it now opted for the Enterprise companys. Is this my cue to move off RH completly? or is this change nothing much more than name changes. I need some perpsectives here.

    Thanks...

  4. Rocket Simulation Software is also available on Build Your Own Saturn V · · Score: 3, Informative

I've been into model rocketry for about two years now with my 12 year old son. It is great fun for both of us. Like most other hobbies, it can be approached from many levels with equal enjoyment. We got the rocket simulation software (Rock Sim) from Apogee last year. It allows you to build model rockets on the software (3D) (using standard parts from hobby stores) and test their flight and return to earth (just as important in models as in real rockets). You can then save and print out the details. There is a demo available on Apogees' site.

Our problem has been in finding good places to launch. We get rained out alot from local rocket club launches and its hard to find places to shoot on our own. We sometimes sneak over to nearby schools with their large playgrounds early on Sunday mornings to launch. Risky in post 9/11 USA.

Going to local rocket club launches is also fun. Not only can you shoot your own rockets off but you can watch the big and experimental rockets launching.

A good source of beginner rockets and hybrid motors for the big boys is Pratt Hobbies. www.pratthobbies.com.

I tried this also on my RH9 system and yes, it forced the install but I still have problems. Only root can run Opera and I get a message complaining of a segmentation fault and it does not find my java installation which I have.

It seems very very fast but I also seem to have some font problems. The menu bar fonts are very small and the rest of the page seems a size or two large.

I really want to use Opera but these install problems are simply not acceptable. I had to pay up another $15 to upgrade from 6 to 7 and this shouldn't be happening.

  7. Re:I found that song on Apple's service on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

Yes, Dr John's version is widely available. But there are 3 or 4 other versions that are very difficult to get. I grew up listening to Prince Partridge's (the songwriter) version. This is the one I wanted and finally found on Napster. I have also found many wonderful blues songs from users in France where I guess the songs are available but not here in the USA.

The point I was trying to make is that many older songs are simply not available except through sharing. There is not a large market for them - or at least there has not been in the past with the old distribution system we had (CDs in local stores and top 40 radio stations).

  8. This may help solve half the problem but... on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 2, Interesting

The great thing about Napster and other file sharing programs to me was that I could find old songs that were virtually unavailable anywhere else. I found old old very obscure blues ("How Come My Dog Don't Bark... by Prince Partridge and others),show tunes and songs from the soundtracks of french films like (Shoot the Piano Player & Jules and Jim), old comedy stuff like Lord Buckley - the list could go on for pages. Anyway, Apples' new store may generate revenue on popular music but it still does not address my problems and I will continue to use file sharing programs for these older unavailable songs.

I don't see how the RIAA can stop file sharing for songs that are not available or in print at the current time. This should be a minimum requirement in my opinion.

I would willingly pay a reasonable fee for what I seek but the fact is much of what I search for is not available anywhere else.

  9. The Sun, The Genome and The Internet on Plankton in the Clouds · · Score: 3, Interesting

by Freeman Dyson talks about this in his wonderful book published in 1999. Specifically he talks about the chances of finding lifeforms on Mars and Europa (a satellite of Jupiter). He suggests looking into the space around Europa instead of on the surface for "freeze dried fish".

From the final chapter: "Every time there is a major impact on Europa, a vast quantity of water will be splashed from the ocean into the space around Jupiter. The water will partly evaporate and partly condense into snow. Any creatures living in the water not too close to the impact (meteor impacts) will have a chance of being splashed intact into space with the water and quickly freeze dried."

I'm not sure if this book has been reviewed in slashdot, but it deserves another shot since so much here is relevant especially after the last shuttle disaster. Dyson is dead on track here.

  10. The masses don't go to comic book stores on Getting Small Press (Comics) To The Masses · · Score: 3, Insightful

If you self publish and want to reach the masses, you must find a distributor or sales agent. The masses go to bookstores. Bookstores hate buying, dealing with single or few title authors directly. If your product is good and the market is there, the books will probably sell.

Find a distributor or salesagent who deals in other independent publishers. These people have relationships established with distributors and stores. They can get your books (maybe) into stores.

You will still have to market and advertise on your own but it will mean zero if you don't already have the comics/books on the shelves in the stores.

No guilt whatsoever. When I was a teenager, the record stores had listening booths and we crowded in to listen to new albums before we bought them. Are we talking about digitizing the rare book collections? New books? Out of Print books? It seems to me that it would be a mammoth undertaking to simply prioritize which books/pamphlets/papers, etc should be digitized. Any book published in the past 5 -10 years are already digitized. This should be the responsibility of the publisher not the library of congress. Perhaps they can archive the copy when it is published but since the Library of Congress doesn't publish books - why should it digitize them now. If we are talking about rare documents, then we are not simply talking about digitizing - we are talking about scanning as well. Are they to preserve the look and feel of the book with photos and illustrations? This also goes way beyond putting the text on disk. They are putting documents and maps and other materials into electronic form and this seems right to me. Who is going to pay for all this and at what expense? Stop keeping the real thing for disks? I hope not.
