Any network sniffing tool is going to be very configurable. A few changes to the filter config and you go from watching only specific communication to watching all communication.
The oversight of the organizations acting on their net-tap warrants is what is important.
PS I have posted the same comment each time carnivor comes up, but I really think the source is irrelevant.

I don't understand what people think a review of carnivore code will do for them.
If anyone with half a brain wrote network monitoring software it would be very flexible. You could change a little config file and go from something none invasive to something that grabs everything.
So, I think it depends more on who is using the software and what methods of oversite exist.
I mean in the intelectual sense. I do not have a problem with animal experimentation.
But, what if we make a mouse so smart that you can not feel OK about experimenting on it anymore. I realize that it has not come to that far yet. Maybe someday it will.
When he says know your tax laws he is not kidding.
I worked at a small company that has now gone public and many people are now wealthy on paper.
But, what people are paying in taxes varies from 28 1/2 % state & federal up to 45% based on when they exercised.
The people who gambled and exercised early protected themselves from AMT and short term capital gains. They might have had to take on a little risk to do so, but if they were not into risk they should not have given up pay for options.
The problem with tools like VB, PowerBuilder is that they let people code beyond their ability.
This lets people develop applications that are unmaintainable, because the original writer did not have the background to handle the implementation of such a complex app. But, the persons incompetence has been hidden by the development tools they are using.
Only later do you find out they have created crap!
I am not a linguist, but I do speak both English and German fluently.
My mother is German my father American. My German family speaks no English and my American family speaks no German.
When I have had to translate I used to try to do a word for word sentence for sentence translation. It never worked. I can not explain why, it just sounded very wrong and sometimes even gave the wrong meaning. Then when I got over having to do sentence for sentence translation and began paraphrasing everyone would understand. I don't see a computer doing any accurate paraphrasing anytime soon.
The part that has killed almost every multi-developer project I have worked on is your number 1.
1) Write Specs
Not that they do not exist. The wrong ones exist.
Some dumb-ass business guy( Project manager ) thinks that a gant chart of the components of the project is enough to get the work done. So no real tech plan is ever done. This seems to happen because businesses don't acknowledge that there are two types of leadership required on a development project. And when their view of the world forces them to put just one person in charge they choose someone like themselves. A business guy who couldn't code his way out of a wet paper bag.
In the end they view coding as if people were interchangeable cogs, they deny the art of what is going on. They put themselves in a situation where they need a real technical design and they do not have one.
I didn't know I had so much pent up anger, this has just happened on the last 3 projects I have been on. I want to do good work, I am always put in a situation where I can not.

If I encrypt something with someone elses public key I still can not decrypt it. So applying the law based on anything I encrypt would not work very well.
When it comes to issues of sexuality like this I think criminalization is the only way to go.
Ten years ago people tried to *fix* homosexuals. Now we just say that different people have different sexual preferences. You can not *fix* a homosexual because they are not broken. You also can not *fix* a pedofile. They just have a sexual preference that society does not approve of.
I personally don't want my family to be the victim of some shrink's latest theory about how to change someone's sexual preference.
If someone is attracted to children lock them up for good.
The problem is that not many people actually click on the banner adds. Unlike in traditional media this is much more directly measurable, you can tell when someone actually responds to your add.
I think the add $$ for banner adds will dry up in favor of some other form of Internet advertizing.
I love both freshmeat and SlashDot and use them everyday!
But, how will this translate into $$ and make for a meaningfull IPO. I can't imagine selling banner adds alone will be a real revenue stream for Andover. What else do they do?
I worked at 3 companies over ten years. They ranged in size from 60,000 to 15. The one thing they all had in common? They did not know how to deal with tech employees.
You have no real advancement path. If you do end up becoming a team lead and then a dept. head you are stuck. They push you away from the technology and cause you to stale. They handicap the very reason people on your team respect you as a manager and work with you to produce awesome results for the company
So you are stuck. Manage or do tech no in between or no advancement. I have experienced this again and again.
Many posts have also been about the upside of employee stock options. I have a ton of options that will probably even be worth something within the next 5 months.
The downside of the options, I had to work my butt off at a 15-person company until it had 200 employees. As they approached their IPO they were almost embarrassed by the young techies that made them a success. One day I was giving routine presentations in front of 50 -300 people. The next day I was hidden away as the new more experienced (read older) people, who they wanted do be the IS face of the company, started screwing stuff up.
Also another set of options I had from a different company turned out to be totally worthless, so with options your millage may vary.
Well now I am contracting. My rate is reasonable and I still make out better financially. I also know my place and am not playing the start-up game anymore.
Maybe after the last start-up experience fades or if the options make me a lot. I will be less down on being an employee.
PS The other upside is that you have an out. So many times I have been an employee and people who should not have been making design decisions were in the architect role. This was painful for me. I like to take pride in my work and I had to work on projects that could not work because of bad design. As a contractor when the contract is up you don't have to feel guilty about not renewing.
It would be cool if there was a "None of the Above" check. The Russians have a good idea with that.
I only survive Minnesota winters!
:-)
I guess I'm almost tough enough for mars, but not quite
Then multi-threaded apps actually have less overhead. The processor caches are already synched up.
If course whether this is good or bad depends on the problem.
Actually that is not true,
There are compilers for many languages that produce java byte code and will run on the JVM.
If this were a raise in the number of teamsters or auto workers being allowed into the country there would be riots in the streets.
Oversight is!!!

I guess you share files on a slow connection? Or you have a fast connection?
If you are not stuck in modem land you should not be so quick to judge.
I think that faster net access would make it easier to share data instead of just downloading it.
My connection is slow enough that I can not share anything, but I would if I had DSL or Cablemodem access.
and.... It sucks.
The menus in office 2000 apps already try to guess what you want to do. They are always moving menu entries arround based on what you are doing.
The end result is that you always have to read the pull-down menu -- you can never learn the position of a selection.
So by trying to anticipate what you want they make you less effecient. Wouldn't this just be more of the same?
