    There's a great Clarke story about two waring civilisations. One out guns and out techs the other but it loses because it's so caught up with the new technology it doesn't take the time to use ANY of it effectivly.
    Anyone remember what it's called? And which book[s] it's in?

    Some browsers seem to strip hrefs from the comment box when you preview. IE does this I know. Netscape 4.5 seems to work fine. Havn't tryed it with Mozilla yet.

    Well if you don't mind I'd like to take this opportunity to utter a few possible outcomes.
    1) Windows(and it's descendants) will remain the dominant OS in the world. Especially on servers.
    2) Congress will cut NASA's funding.
    3) AndyL will not win the Lotto jackpot.
    4) The gravitational constant will remain constant.

    So what? This is Taco's site. The stated purpose of the site is to mention news that interests him and his small group of friends. They don't hide this. It's what the site is about.
    If you don't like it you have two choices :
    A: Read www.cnn.com and news.yahoo.com
    B:Start your own site with news that you like.

    Personaly I think /.'s stories usualy coincide with my intrests but if they didn't I'd go find some other site. I wouldn't stick around and complain about it.

    They don't make any secret of it. In fact theres a controll bar at the top of each story. And anouther in your user preferences.

    Don't you think you're doing this bit backwards? Better to buy a DVD player and trash the VCR. This way you can buy all the movies you want except for the ones that try the skip-dvd-for-profit-gouging routeen. Otherwise you're still paying too much for out-dated media and Lucas laughs all the way to the bank.

    I think it's safe to say that unless you stop watching movies entirly you will eventualy own a DVD drive/player of some sort. When you do you will want movies for it. So why not get them now and save yourself from buying them twice?

    Slashdot has always been about what Rob and his friends are personaly interested in. They never made any attempt to make it unbiased or allencompasing. But we knew that when we got here.

    I've never been to impressed with the generic brands. Lego's production values seem to be very high. I've never gotten two pieces that didn't fit together Perfectly. (Until I steped on them ore something)

    Yea, but prety soon people are going to be sick of .com. Already non-technical people tell me they simply can't understand why they even bother with the ".com" if it's the same on all web sites Why not leave it off?
    I think people would welcome more descriptive TLDs even if it would just irritate me.

    A primitive version of what you sugest is "BackOfficer Friendly". It's great fun. When a skript kiddy port scans you it reports that a bunch of your ports are open. And it reports that you're running Back Orifice. Then you can sit back and watch as they try to be 31337 hackers.

    Unfortunetly it only carries the illusion so far. There are no files to be FTPed and no matter what login/password combo they try they can't log in through telnet. It'd be cool to have a progeam that carries this to the next level.

    BOF can be found here. Although It doesn't seem to be shareware anymore. At least I can't find the download.

    Keep in mind that the database is not static. Since Napster depends on the people currently loged in the database changes as people log in and out. If you don't find it now try back in half an hour.

    Here's your clue : Troll is spelled "t-r-o-l-l". Troll is spelled "t-r-o-l-l". I know the similarities are tough to see. But they're there.

    There's a difference between debating a topic or document and giving legal advice.
    For example if personA asks "Is such and such legal?" and personB says "Yes." Then personB has just claimed that [s]he knows the specifics of all laws, National,state,local or otherwise regarding to "such and such". If this happens on Slashdot personB is almost certainly a programmer or programer-wannabe who doesn't have the knowledge he claimed he had back when I began this paragraph.

    Imagine if they were talking about something technical instead of legal.
    PersonA:"Can I run My DOS program on my iMAC?"
    PersonB:"Of course, current MacOS has the ability to read data off of PC disks and DOS runs on a PC so you should be fine. But IANAProgrammer"

    The minister said he probed one such case, actually logging onto the parishioner's computer himself. To his horror, an artificial-intelligence program started spontaneously.
    "The program began talking directly to me, openly mocked me," he recalls. "It typed out, 'Preacher, you are a weakling and your God is a damn liar.'"


    This is the best part. It's obvious what's happening here, someone heard his sermon about devils->computers and realised he was clueless. So they set up a little practical joke.

    That image is the same image that is always used to denote a color Palm. If you go to Palm's web site you'll see photo's of the IIIc devices all with that screen on them.

    Frankly I suspect something is wrong with the color screen. Every electronics store around here has demo units on display for all the other palm versions and even a few WinCE devices. But the IIIc is always a mock-up with that screen shot glued on.
