mice are small, but you need a surface to use them. the wacky power adapter you only need a plug, which does not have to be that close to you, and you dont always need. isnt long battery life one of the things these have going for them?
carrying a mouse kinda defeats the purpose of a notebook.

i like the thought of using PPC for a notebook, (low power usage and heat) but X is a bitch with only one mouse button! if apple or anyone made a PPC based notebook with 3 mouse buttons to use with Xfree86, id buy it.
the current ibm thinkpads have 3 mouse buttons, so im looking at those...
i also dont like the track pad, but thats just my preference.
anyone know of a linux dists that fits under 200megs and can be installed over pcmcia ethernet?
my roomate, who has previously only watched her girlfriend on her mac. she was as computer illiterate as they come. gave her a simple menu on mlvwm (mac like window manager) with netscape, aol toys (instant messanger etc) and a couple other such things, thus a simplified version of the mac interface. she never had a problem with it.
are there any 3 button thinkpads that work with X? (meaning the 3 mouse buttons work with X) i see a third mouse button on the pics at thier site, but its advertised as a web scrolling thingy so i dont know if it would work...
id like any resonably priced notebook with 3 mouse buttons that can run linux or bsd. i know tadpole and rdi make sparc based ones, but they are too expensive.
The reference spec is not up to par for next years hardware. the AGP is only 2x, its still has ISA and serial devices, no usb, and the PCI bus is only 33mhz.
anything like this for a mac?

cant find linuxppc lite (looked all over both the.org and.com site)
have a friend learning web stuff, has an imac, wants to play with the gimp...
only free as in free beer, i saw no indication that it would ever really be free. (compaq seems to have a problem with this IP thing) a much better solution would be for compaq to make the back end to gcc or have cygnus do it (with full spec) that could solve the little compatibility issues the web site complains about.
a least from what ive seen with fireworks. its just kinda procedural. not much different than changing a line or two in a script-fu.
something that records "history" was discussed on the list dont know how/ where that went. (the idea was more like mayas script editor window than photoshops history thingy)
as the other poster said, its not just for film. the way gimp16 handles memmory is also (potentially) faster when you have big images, and enough ram to deal. being able to use the shared memmory segment with other applications is a nice thing too.
used to make my living off photoshop, unless your dealing with print, the gimp is definately worth the time it takes to learn. i almost never touch photoshop anymore. the gimp is just alot more flexible in its design. mostly cause its so easy to write plug ins for...
da gimp. youll have to write your own flic output, but it does mpeg and gif89. there are a couple of other such things availble too. freshmeat can probably help you find them.
does anyone actaually use C++ to implement low level libraries like this? (id call it device driver, but the example refers to GLU which does not interact with hardware)
at from/. it seems they are more likely to go for the IBM PPC boards or alpha (EV6 comes on a pretty sweet board, too bad compaq is greedy with thier compiler tech. lets hope IBM/motorola wont be. im certain apple would if it were up to them).

i saw nothing on nvidias site about using
the gforce for anyting besides gamming. no
mention of an overlay plane which many 3d
apps need.
if they really do have a good 3d engine for
serious work, hopefully they will make a
high end board.

eaasiest thing for you is to learn IP chanins and
and make yourself a nice paranoid firewall.
they had the black cubes, monitors, and keyboards
almost wndering what the local psychos will read into this one...
(teehee!)
lots of people do that with thier desk top cases,
why not notebook?
if they dont, youll be even more tempted to use
linux instead.

its beta. if they were giving it away for free
there would be no reason not to just make thier
own back end to gcc for the alpha.

sad the the g4 macs have only a 2x agp...
maybe apple should look at matrox or number nine.
