So how many patent applications have you filed? How many applications have you read? How can you be sure '99%' of them are 'bullshit'?
I don't disagree that many are rediculous but your comment seems absurd.
I work for a credit card processing company and we're a Mac company. We develop on our dual G5s and our sales staff uses powerbooks and iBooks. We get the luxury of using OmniGraffle over visio (its cheaper too!). We did break down and buy office, but we still use iCal and Mail.app over entourage.
Our server environment runs 1U IBM x306s running fedora core 4.
I can definately say we've saved a significant amount by not going windows.

I'd have to 100% disagree with you here. "java has a mind of its own" is an extremely ignorant statement. While the quality of many java applications is below acceptable, critizing the virtual machine and its related frameworks and apis from the perspective of a systems adminstrators is doing nothing but spreading FUD.
Java has several advantages that the majority of other technology stacks lack. That advantage is choice. This being said it is a double edged sword. Don't like writing SQL? Use hibernate, toplink, iBatis, torque, OJB, castor or about 20 other functionaly similar technologies. The main problem imho with java is to write an end to end application you have to be proficient in a breadth of technology stacks. With this choice comes responsibility which in many cases leads to failure.
Isn't half implemented for the better part of a half decade like rest of the MySQL stack. I give the swedes kudos for finally becoming a real database with version 5 (they only became a half assed database in 2003 with InnoDb).
Finally we have stored procedures, and XA transactions, and the migration to 5 from 4.1.xx doesn't seem to be as hellacious as 3.xx to 4.xx (we're fighting fedora core's default build of 3.xx right now)
But I guess who really wants transactions any way?
As a founder of a funded startup myself I hope he suceeds, but statistically he won't. Maybe i'm alone here, but i'm having a hardtime envisioning the business model of such a company (and doubt his ability to lead it to profitability). Sure bittorrent is a neat technology: but its just that a technology, and an open one too. It appears to be a long shot, and thats why funding came from venture capitalists. From most slashdotters POV i'm sure that sounds awesome until you realize what accepting venture capital is typically about: 90%+ stock takeovers with rider clauses allowing the investment firm first dibs on any money withdrawn from the company. I hope he hires someone to run the company that can translate whatever products he comes up with into something that can actually be sold.
The world isn't going to implode, the world's IBM servers will be just fine. The notion that all Comp Sci programs are horrible and don't prepare students for field work is just absurd.
I went to the University of Texas system and we had several required courses covering deep aspects of OS systems. This is another article reflecting the typical attitude on slashdot, that IT people are something more than contributors. Most of everything in this industry is written documented SOMEWHERE.
And as long as they continue to produce literate graduates, I believe we'll be fine.
Albeit not blades by the strict definition: Mac Minis + Hacked.Mac + Myrad of server side webapplications. We even have a windows server to remote desktop into for the windows only applications we have decided to run (Quickbooks enterprise edition).

Seeing how the internet was birthed out of US taxpayer dollars why should we let the UN run it?

A little bondo and some buffing should do the trick.
When we take the shuttle back to the dealer they're going to rape us!
