I'm curious. Does NASA have measurable objectives? If so, how is its performance measured against those objectives? How well has it done?
In general, does the manned space program as a whole have a positive business case? How has it performed? Has it been a net benefit or disbenefit for the American people? Would it have been different (or would it have existed at all) were it run by the private sector?
Can supporters of the space program point to specific achievements and say 'Here, these are ways in which the program has benefitted the American people.' Is there a specific and verifiable net gain? Can this be measured? If so, how?
No, I do not want any money focused on manned missions.
I want the entire space program cancelled and those involved to be forced to personally repay every single dollar.
That would be a start.
Yet another space program failure. How many more will it take before they understand that this has no point? Why are we even spending money on this anyway?
At last... maybe the utter failure that is the space program will be shut down for ever.
It's brought nothing but death, misery, moral depravity, secularism and other preversions.
I guess I don't buy because I don't play computer games.
Why not?
Probably because I'm too old (ie old enough to tie my own shoelaces and go outside without supervision).
My question to you sir, is *why* you seem to want to spend MY tax dollars so freely. If you want space exploration and think it's a laudable goal, by all means send all your money in, I'm sure nobody will give it back.
I too am a trekkie (trekker?), I love space exploration and think that spending money on it is worth it, but where I differ with you is in putting a gun to other people's heads and asking them to share in our value system. Yes, there are worse things I can think my money could be (and is) being spent on, but that's a faulty argument for spending it on *your* pet project.
After some thought, no, I'm not going to give you that.
I am completely opposed to space exploration, whether funded privately or by the taxpayer.
Am I the only one outraged that taxpayers' money is being wasted on some Big Boys' Super Space Adventure? (or whatever they want to call it).
Wake up people, your tax dollars are subsidising Trekkies.
'Then take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.'
I've seen far too much of this stuff getting through both my filters to say anything other than 'Fuckin' A!'
And no, I don't care if this installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.

That cartoon is a disgusting perversion and should be banned.
I see the usual hate squad has assembled to celebrate death. Nice going, guys.
Well, looks like /. is having trouble telling fact from fiction... again. There's no such thing!
I guess it's OK to steal other peoples' work now. But anyone trying to stop that? Bad.

Many photographers are honestly puzzled as to why this keeps happening to them. But the rest of us know why.
...and it was nothing like it has been described by the liberal media. Kid was being a snotnosed brat. Surprised they didn't arrest him.
Something else for lowlife trekkie wasters to get upset over?
I don't have a violin small enough.
What a comedian you are. Really, I bow to your hilarity.
So now we've got that out of the way, what purpose does this serve? Does anyone really think this stuff has a point to it?
Why aren't these kids being punished for wasting school time and resources?
No-one is saying that it is 'just fine'.
But then I guess your posturing is more important than mere facts.
Don't let us distract you.
The law is the law, and he broke it.
Seems you're awful keen to defend an admitted criminal.
I don't care how much it costs, it's still the wrong thing to do.
Yes, I'm sure that America will be united in its support of the manned space program. Or probably not.
Obama makes the right decision. Space exploration has no practical purpose.
Time to kill the space program once and for all. A juvenile, stupid waste of money and lives.
Go indulge your space adventure fantasies somewhere else, idiots.
Can't do the time? Don't do the crime.
Why not shut down the space program altogether? It's not good for anything anyway.

I cannot possibly foresee a way that this could be turned against the public in some horrific Orwellian fashion.
I am involved with the UK version. No, I'm not proud of myself. Why do you ask?
