And that would be fine, if it actually worked. SecuROM is notorious for causing slowdowns, crashes, etc. In fact, of all the copy protection schemes around, it's probably the most irritating for legal consumers.

In addition, the new games using SecuROM have already been cracked. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 isn't even supposed to be out on store shelves until Tuesday, and the ISO is posted all over the internet, crack and all.

The thing is, if the companies didn't spend so much money on copy protection, perhaps they could lower the software price a bit? And perhaps that would promote more sales? Unless software companies are willing to look at, and research, that option, then I am not willing to give them credit for making good business decisions. Copy protection has _never_ worked. Since the very beginings of it, with key disks (credit to the other person who brought this up first) to the most complex dongle based systems. It never has worked, and never will work. One day, publishers will figure this out. The question is, how long? It's been 20 years already.

  12. Sequal? What about the originals? on LucasArts announces Sam & Max sequel · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think it's great that LucasArts is creating sequals to these games, but new gamers will have absolutely no idea what they're playing a sequal to. You cannot go back and play these games without building a computer specifically for the task, or using the SCUMM engine, which LucasArts is trying to sue out of existence.

While I look forward to these releases, the sad fact is this is a long time comming. It's just further evidence to me that someone making decisions at LucasArts just 'doesn't get it'. This seems like a move by a company struggling to release a good product. I'm sure they have no shortage of money with all their star wars releases, but they've been really letting their fans down in the last 5 or 6 years with BOATLOADS of crappy games all based on Star Wars, and nothing original at all.

I hope this move begins a new day at LucasArts, where they diversify their game line a bit, perhaps stop being so sue-happy, and maybe even write their own emulator to run their games in windows operating systems, so new gamers can learn why we all liked LucasArts so much in the past. I feel bad for anyone who hasn't had the chance to play The Dig, DOTT, Sam & Max, or Full Throttle, or any of the Monkey Island games.

Seriously, this is fine for those of us who want it all. If you don't want it all, pick which one you'd prefer and buy that. I am a modest collector, and so value both sets because they are unique. I'm only a casual LOTR fan, but I'm a hardcore fan of well produced DVDs for good movies, and both sets will satisfy that need.

Also, the price is VERY reasonable for what you're getting. 4 DVDs for 30 dollars? (MSRP is WAY over what you'll actually pay) where do I sign? If you want frustration, take a look at Evil Dead. I bought it a long time ago, but had to re-purchase nearly the SAME DISC because of the special release that came out not long ago, and for _40_ dollars! ONE DVD!. That's gouging folks, this LOTR thing is just cool ;)

For the record, I am happy with the Evil Dead DVD overall, and don't feel I wasted my money, but only because I'm that much a fan ;) The advantage to having both is that I can watch the first to see the movie, and keep the newer one 'pristine' :)

  19. Slashdot is so predictable on Windows XP Has Arrived · · Score: 1

I love this place. Having read the post, I knew, before hitting the 'read more' button, what I was going to see. There would be people making jokes, of course, which is always good. There would be people saying that today is a sad day for software, there'd be people talking about why their country is better than ours (What the hell is that crap about? For the record, Steve Ballmer is in Europe today. Stop thinking you're so ****ing special). I'd see people saying all the reasons why XP is the devil's OS and how Linux is so great. Hello, this is slashdot people. We know linux is great, you don't have to preach to the choir. I'd see, very few, POSITIVE messages about XP. The sad thing is, everyone likes XP. Everyone except self-absorbed geeks who don't like it simply because microsofts name is on it. A good deal of these same geeks use other windows OSes, yet go on about how crappy they are. Hypocritical?

Sorry, a tagent. What I was going to say, is that I haven't seen a bad review of XP by a reputable source yet. People knock the candy interface, and that's fine.. it is aweful shiny, and some people still use clacky keyboards and drive junkers from the 70s. That's personal preference, and that can also be changed for you guys who like the old style. However, it's been said by several people, that everyone who tries XP for any good length of time, CAN'T go back. It's just BETTER. It's a huge, no, mammoth improvement over the 9X line. It's not as big an improvement over 2K. The home version actually loses some things. The pro version however, does include some nice features, but for the most part, it's not something you MUST do.

  20. Re:There already is such an organization on Slashdot in Politics? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Lobbying doesn't HAVE to involve buying politicians. Did no one take basic government classes in high school? If you have a million people fill out a petition and go to everyone in congress showing how much support there is for something, that's lobbying. Walking around the capital waving a sign is lobbying. Anything that pushes your ideas onto the politicians is lobbying. Of course, money speaks louder than people, and having a group like the slashdot community to counter people like the NRA and religious right (the two most powerful lobbys) wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Who cares if it's not technically the proper way to run a democracy? Until things change, it's how ours is run. Either play the game, or figure out how to change it.

The problem is, geeks have no balls. They also don't know how to get together as a group, and don't seem to like parting with their money for anything. The EFF is not a lobby, and shouldn't be a lobby. That doesn't mean there shouldn't _be_ a geek lobby, it just means there isn't one yet. And everyone with any concern for our political system should be JUMPING at the opportunity to get on board.

Heh, the National Association of Geeks, NAG ;)

Whether they drive drunk or not, they've showed a complete lack of responsibility, and responsibility is a very important thing before someone gets behind a wheel. I've lived in michigan for 21 years, the zero tolerance law is probably one of the few good laws we got :P Talk about fighting the wrong battle.
