With Mac Ports any of my favorite Unix utilities were a command away.

That was my experience however... I am curious what restrictions you felt there were that caused you to avoid it and go with the one I found significantly more restrictive?

They toned the white down quite a bit with Leopard so I am OK... but soon as shapeshifter will make it dark again, you bet I will re-install it so my eyes are comfortable looking at the screen.

Re-load OS and bam, good to go. All apps started no need to re-do registry entries or re-install. All my settings for all my apps were there because they installed IN MY HOME DIRECTORY in a clean way etc etc.

Never have I seen Windows recover from an OS level screw up so elegantly. It is simply not capable of it by the design of the registry and apps which sprawl all over the file system.

Using .Mac to backup my mail, bookmarks etc start to finish on the wipe and upgrade was about 3 hours tops. Probably only took that long because I let it check the DVD.

  21. Re:business and government are run by aliens? on GAO Report Slams FCC · · Score: 2, Insightful

Your argument, as many have pointed out... is based in an ideal fantasy of what our Government should be. Bill Gates may only be allowed to donate a couple grand PERSONALLY, but every non-profit, company etc he exerts enough influence over to dictate policy (i.e. a few hundred more than likely) can EACH give a politician a couple grand. Adds up fast, and making one man happy for that much money is a hell of a lot easier than make lots of people happy for a $10 each (the most a politician can realistically hope to get from any given person). Oh and while your campaign might only get a couple grand... your "Friends of" organization gets a large check as well, several schools in your district all of a sudden get software and/or hardware donations with your name on them etc etc. All perfectly legal.

The second difference is he can do it over and over again whereas the common man is lucky to be capable of donating at that level once. This means while you may get a smile for your $10, Gates can (and will) buy every politician he can based on them voting his way.

Here is where the career politician becomes a VERY bad idea. If you are a politician and will only serve one term... you can take anyone's money who will give it to you, then vote however you like as it won't matter once you are done. You accept money from someone like Gates and he holds it over you all through your term with the threat of no more money next time you run.

I know this for a fact as I worked on a political campaign for a California Senator in college when Microsoft was trying to buy themselves out of antitrust trouble and sat in on the meeting where MS reps offered him a rather substantial bribe if he would help make it go away. They covered it in diplomatic double talk of course but the gist was he agreed to help save their ass they would cover a large portion of his campaign. Something to the tune of 1/6 the money he needed to finish the race, and we were half way. To his credit he told them to shove off, but I doubt very many would.

More recently they tried to buy themselves a standard via politicians. Show me a single person who can create that much influence over the policy of that many countries and I will buy your version.

As several people have mentioned above this is pretty obviously a move by RIAA companies to try and weaken Apple's negotiating power with them. Since Apple was the first to push non DRM music and force the issue of reasonable prices etc I am inclined to help them out a little against the RIAA and not buy from Amazon.

If everyone jumps ships and goes to Amazon you are doing exactly what the RIAA WANTS you to do, and in six months prices will jack up DRM will be back and we are all screwed because no one has the power to stand up to the monopoly. ONLY another monopoly can do it until such time as the RIAA is finally nailed under RICO.

Missing the point... in order for that to happen peoples retirement funds which are tied up in stocks would have to stagnate which means the fund goes under, or they pull the money out and the company becomes worth nothing.

Mean while we have outrageous home loans because people feel they are entitled to make money off their house in a very short period of time, and if they don't will sell driving prices down and/or not vote for the politicians who want to keep their careers (note this, important, the career politician is a BAD thing as far as all this is concerned) and so people keep doing things to drive home prices up, again to make money.

Those executives get paid by stock holders more or less who are the cause of problem #1, and also #2. The fact people expect to not have to save and instead "invest" a smaller amount and that doing so entitles them to make wads of cash off it is silly. Companies are expected to be worth billions within a year instead of building up over decades as they used to. Everyone wants a Google with $550 stock price after five years.

Mean while these same people pay 1/4 their income in interest to the banks via credit cards, home loans, car loans etc because they couldn't wait another year to buy that big screen TV or buy the house with wood countertops instead of granite. Another large portion goes to pay off the governments debt (100% of your federal income tax in the US goes to pay interest in debt, not provide service).

A debt based economy is doomed to implode if people stop spending for even a week.

After Sept 11th what did the government ask people to do? Serve in the military? Volunteer in their community? No... keep spending. That should tell you something.
