    There is an open source Java compiler out there - Jikes. What bad has become of it?

    The best defense to forking is momentum/inertia. Sun has already said that there are 5 million or so users, who would want to leave them behind?

    All too often, I see ESR and others merely summarize information that is already out there, and take easy shots at Microsoft. I have said so in the past.

    This article appeared genuinely different to me, and is the type of article I would like to encourage. Based on the other replies - somehow that makes me bad. Whatever.

    Even is the information that the article was based on turns out to be incorrect, this is quite different than accusing ESR of "trying to propagate a lie". By making such statements, this makes me wonder about your motives; reducing your credibility; exactly the point I was originally trying to make.

    Brings up a new and important point (four years is a long time to go unnoticed) that didn't get much press coverage previously, and refrains from taking gratuitious shots at Microsoft that would detract from the message.

    Expecially good is the "Microsoft HQ is doubtless sincere when it says this back door wasn't authorized". In this case, giving MS the benefit of the doubt actually makes the case for open source *stronger*.

    While traveling in England recently, I got a chance to see a British documentary on computers. It touched on the subject of pornography on the internet, and stated that the problem was being overblown. It said that the most that children could get access to was text, but downloading a picture was beyond the abilities of most, and seeing a video was near impossible.

    The documentary was originally made in 1995, and was still being shown late last year.

    Anything that is possible today, and that there is a demand for, will be made easy for all to use much faster than any government can react.

    Pretty much the same idea, albeit on a much smaller scale, IBM NetObjects TopPage for Linux has links to download a base version of Wine required as well as the patches which must be applied on top of it.

    Why does it seem more and more like Cygnus is the one who decided to acquire the now-sexy brand image that RedHat build up?

    Who is the CEO of the "merged" company. Who now is the CTO?

    And best of all, it is actually in their best interests to be perceived as the ones being bought out...

    As an IBMer who has worked through the legal, marketing, and executive teams to get commit status to PHP and Jakarta let assure you that it can be done.

    And none of this would have been possible without the pioneers who blazed the path towards open source within IBM with contributions like Jikes.

    Mindcraft tries again, and issues this call for an "open benchmark" to retry its NT-vs.-Linux tests. This time, people who know something about Linux will be allowed to participate

    June, 1999
    The Mindcraft benchmark is rerun with Linux experts present. NT still wins; Linux comes out with set of things to fix. Many of the fixes happen within a few weeks.

    RedHat comes with Kaffe. Does this imply that Sun is now endorsing a cleanroom implementation? Particularly given Kaffe's development is aided by Microsoft...

    Sun's earlyAccess JDK for Linux only runs on i386 machines. According to Kevin Hendricks, Sun spokesman only said that Sparc might eventually get supported

    In order to support web browsers as Notes clients, a lot of rendering must be done on the server - at the expense of all other users. For many installations which are running at peak capacity, this is a luxury that can't be afforded.

    Mozilla (a.k.a. Navigator 5.0) already has an ActiveX control which is plug compatible with IE5. All one needs to change in their program is the GUID. 12-14 months? Should take about 12-14 seconds...

    They even have a program which can be run on binaries and automates the process....

    It isn't a zero sum game, folks. If Mandrake is successful, this will likely increase the number of users of Linux in general, and attract more developers, possibly resulting in a net increase of *each* distribution.

    The trend is happening again, and again, and again.
    • What do you do if you are making a product for the mass market and you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being the number two vendor? You make it free.
    • What do you do if the number one vendor has made theirs free (gratis)? You publish the source, protocols
    It is amusing to see people taking positions on these events based on their preconceived notions as to the relative "goodness" or "evilness" of the corporate sponsor. Yesterday, AOL was evil. Today they are good. Bah!

    Message to all: chill. Enjoy. It doesn't matter who is doing this, in the long run we are the winners.

    The Mozilla ActiveX control implements the IE COM interface. You should be able to substitute one for the other by simply changing the GUID.

    What I don't know is to what extent wine implements the necessary ActiveX infrastructure.
