  1. Dull boring boxes on Japan's New Supercomputing Toy · · Score: 1

Is it me... or is it that ever since Seymore Cray died, supercomputers decided to take on a dull filing-cabinet look rather than the futuristic look?

Ok, IBM gets some points for the "its not a cube, it slanted" look... but where are the blinky lights? Surely for as much money that is paid, a few pennies can be diverted to the visual appeal?

    Heh,

Imagine the fun if he was invited by the BBC to speak about open source and governments...

  3. Trantor on Siberian Permafrost Melting · · Score: 1

Does anyone remember Issac Asimov's description of the planet Trantor - with the black heat radiators extending out into space, dissipating in the infra-red the planet's surplus heat.

  4. Stand back... on Slashdot's "Instant" Legal Analysis of the MS Ruling · · Score: 1
It is time to stand back and mourn the loss of other worthy operating systems which were crushed by the Microsoft Juggernought...

    The roll call includes:
RiscOS - A brilliant multitasking OS from the UK

AmigaOS - Yet another great UK operating system

GeoWorks - Another good OS (IMO, prettier than Winblows)

DR-DOS & GEM - GEM died early on... DR-DOS was worthy until Microsoft made sure Windows wouldn't run with it. Go Calderia... Go get 'em

IBM OS/2 - The Most worthy alternative to the Winblows platform... Died because of "deals" struck between MS and ISVs which prevented them from publishing products for this OS.

Perhaps now, there may be some justice... And hopefully a morsel of revenge.

If you think that Microsoft is playing rough right now, think again.

    They haven't even started.

Remember all the anti-OS/2 hype and smearing from 1991 through to 1998? It'll happen all over again but this time it is for Linux. Remember - the public are a malleable bunch. Say something loud and frequently enough, they will believe - no matter what physical evidence jumps up and bites them on the nose.

Hey, it's good to see many ex-inmates of Reading University's Cybernetics course read Slashdot...

There's hope yet for you guys!

Seriously - it's quite enlightening (but not surprising) that the implant didn't work as advertised. But there again, very few projects developed by the undergrads actually worked.

    And those which did against all expectation get taken to bits and used for the next years Reverse Engineering course. (;

  8. Re:Good idea! on Death Knell for OS/2 Client · · Score: 1

This is an idea I'd love to be involved in... (see some of my comments on 32bits online)

IMO, FreeBSD would make a better codebase... YMMV.

I personally don't care what the underlying OS is - as long as it's easy to use. OS/2 has the most productive GUI... And my favorite web browser has to be the OS/2 versions as they don't block on a name lookup.... All my favorite apps are for OS/2. Since OS/2's APIs are reasonably well documentated, a clone should be more feasible than a 'doze clone - and we won't be chasing a moving target.

And of late, I have been buying quite a few O'Reilly books. Well worth the money - concidering the hours it has saved me.
