So all the hot stuff we've been chucking into our environment for the last couple centuries just magickally went away? All the CO and SO2 likewise? All the forests that have been cleared sprang up anew someplace else that only you managed to notice?

I just try really hard not to think too much about the many mental hoops some folks must jump through to avoid conclusions that should be patently obvious to any 6th-grader of reasonable intelligence.

I know formally agnostic people who got into 'new age' mysticism and became (in some form) Buddhist through reading and learning online.

If they got into mysticism, they most certainly did not become Buddhists. Buddhism starts out by telling you to accept nothing on faith, to use your senses and mind to learn the truth, and that ignorance is the root cause of all suffering.

And please learn the difference between "formal" and "former". I believe you actually intended the latter.

Same here. No attempts at obfuscation or what have you, either. And I used to get similar messages on Skype before I started blocking anyone not on my contact list. Now I just get an occasional contact request from someone at some Chinese company. Pipes, plastics, wire/cable, and construction equipment.

I was passing through Shenzhen a couple of years ago, and the bus went right by the office (very large building, very prominent signage) of one of the companies I'd received mail from. I can't recall the name any longer, but my brother-in-law later told me that it's a well-known firm in the region and has a fairly good reputation. So I guess at least some of these offers were the real deal.

So you're going to ignore completely the fact that our desire to bond and share a home with another (or others) is at the core of what makes us human.

Laws concerning marriage did not arise in a vacuum. They came about because, when humans reach maturity, they typically pair up to live, eat, sleep, share resources, and often make babies together; and these pairings tend to be exclusive (or mostly so), lifelong (or at least spanning many years), and recognised by others as family/social units.

Reproductive concerns aside, it is still in society's interest to encourage stable social groups, and social groups don't get any more basic than couples.
