I have no issue whatsoever with a developer being compensated for their time, nor does it even raise an eyebrow for me.
So, let's say we're doing Unicode support. Who's going to put more effort in it: Dev A, who's Korean and loves that program, Dev B, who wants to learn about all the quirks of Unicode, or Dev C, who's got an item in a checklist to tick off?
Now, which one of these is more likely to get paid for whatever they do?
That means that now when you use hotmail, or office live or msn, or any of the Microsoft web properties, there is a chance that not only the NSA and the US courts can access your data, but also unelected and corrupt Chinese officials.
How many NSA officials did you vote for? What about judges? Just because you get to make one decision every four years, your government is not magically perfect either.
The Chinese have one big advantage over the US: their government doesn't need to lie to anyone. When they monitor the internet, they say so. And if you think your clean and elected officials don't, just try and exchange a few emails with a friend about blowing up something.
I mean, basically they'd be lying to the concerned party by saying "Ohh, this isn't the OPEN SOURCE software you're afraid of." Even though it's the same code.
There is one big difference: it might not be the concerned party that's afraid of Open Source. I mean, they want to use it. It's some other entity they have a valid contract with, and that contract says no OSS.
Depending on the wording of that contract, a new licence can solve a lot of headaches.
Ever had an mp3 player that forced the tag structure on you while your songs weren't perfectly tagged?
Seriously, show me one player that knows "Tupac Shakur", "Tupac", "2Pac", and "2pac" are the same artist, or one that can figure out if there are two artists in the tag.
Truthfully though, where the heck are the meta-data based filesystems that we were promised?
We've been writing software for tree-based filesystems for 40 years, and unless you want to port all those, the best we could do is a hybrid. Yeah, it'd be nice for holiday pictures, but what about system files?
Having been classified as ADHD in the early 70's it's so nice to finally get my revenge now that everyone has been infected with the damn Attention Deficit Syndrome.
Exactly. The things we do in front of the computer now are inherently multitasked. That doesn't mix well with not inherently multitasked things we do, like having a spoken conversation with someone.
When you browse, code, write an email, etc. all at once, you do the scheduling. When someone starts talking to you, you have two options: a) schedule them in with the rest, and make them believe you're not paying attention (and/or are unable to, hence ADHD), or b) throw your whole state of mind out the window, and listen to their highly informative and productive inane ramblings.
China and the US are not in a war, so to label them as spies seems rather odd.
Yes, they are, although the battlefield is purely economic. The US is losing.
I wonder if China can do the same technological leap as Japan did after WW2.
you are dead wrong that "everyone" will act like this when faced with hunger and thirst.
Yep. People aren't even noble in Nethack when starving.
The importance of irony when ridiculing the government is not to be overlooked.
Likewise, the importance of common sense when judging the actions of the government cannot be underestimated.

a language is not static, but dynamic,
And the most dynamic of them all: bullshit.
The problem is not that they have a new word, it's that they have a new word for no reason and nobody knows what it means exactly.
So, everyone who doesn't accept the One True Internet gets written off as a geek? Fine, next time fix your own damn cupholder.
Couldn't we just ditch Flash and use something less retarded?

Right. Because we all know, everyone is serious on the internet.
Nobody should be arrested because the authorities don't have a sense of humor.
This is the internet. There is no such thing as "like-minded individuals".
There are a lot of fixed width fonts specifically designed so each character is unique in appearance. That is not negotiable when programming.

Their government is Evil from my value system and I would love to see the Chinese people do something about that.
Two words: Bush. Re-elected.
Umm, child support?
so long as the files have accurate metadata.

And "system, bin", "system, sbin", "system, /usr/bin", "system, /usr/sbin"... How would this be better than a tree-based structure again?
Nevermind the fact that we could actually do all the things that are nice in a tag-based system right now. Just think about symlinks for a second.

Hint: start practicing yoga.
If I want to use my whole body to play, I'll go outside. Don't take my keyboard/mouse/controller away from me.
Mr. eldavojohn, you're under arrest for violating the Slashdot Anti-Proofreading Act.
Turns out Picasso was just a Perl script on drugs.

Why should they have to learn when they can solve it with money? It keeps the economy going.
Great chance for noobs to try removing crap until something breaks
Except the "noobs" don't want that. They want to play games, watch porn and get on with their lives.
