In my experience, that laptop will stay kicking for at least the full 3 years that you can buy your full service warranty at (it's worth the extra cost for that by the way). I had one of the second generation (white) iBooks, and when i sold it after 3 years of hard abuse (I ripped a lot of DVDs), the only thing that had been broken on it was the hard drive. I had a PowerBook G4 that had the display backlight burn out after a year (fixed no questions asked in 3 days, plus they replaced the rubber feet cause they had been beaten up by my a bit). It was still going strong 2.5 years later when I had to return it to an employer I was leaving. My wife still has hers that she bought around the same time, and it has never had any problems. I am sure there are plenty of people who have had bad experiences. It happens. But from my experience, they build a solid machine. Whether or not it's worth the extra price is up to you.

I don't have an issue with metered service and would be happy to sign on as I believe that I SHOULD be realistically paying a lot less. But if they're already able to meter bandwidth, why not just charge a set rate per byte? Why does it need to be so complicated that you buy into a tiered plan? Oh of course, tiered plans are more lucrative because you are either paying for unused service or paying extortion rates for any over usage. I want them to do this openly, but these tiered plans are far from open. The result will be confusing and probably more expensive for everyone, whether you use a lot or not. Honestly, $15 for 1 GB?? Is their structure really that fragile?

With Apple's higher end laptops, I've tried to configure an equivalent system from Dell. The result is that high end systems cost a lot of money (Dell's was a couple hundred cheaper by the way). Also keep in mind that with Apple, if your shit's broke, they send you a box next day air, you put your laptop in and and ship it back next day air with the label they give you, and then you usually get it back within 3 days, no charge if you're still under warranty. That's pretty hardcore service compared to the on-site service I've had from Dell.

Big corporations have two main directives for dealing with patents that could make them money. Either buy up a little guy who has done the leg work to prove that there is market demand, OR wait till the patent runs out cause the little guy can't afford to do anything with it anyways. Remember, a provisional patent lasts a very limited amount of time, and it usually takes longer than that to find a buyer.

Yes, you'll burn in hell if you aren't saved

See, I and many others have a little problem with this concept. Specifically, are you saying that every single person in human history up until after Christ died is now burning in hell? All miscarried babies are burning in hell? (Limbo was recently rejected as a concept after all) Granted, Yahweh is a wrathful God (not to say that's bad, but it's a fact many Christians like to gloss over), so maybe. But in general I have a hard time buying into this argument. The Church makes a lot of presuppositions based on what the founder of the modern church Saul said, but he never met Jesus. The Church has all taken his claim to having a vision of Jesus on the cross at face value.

That's a tricky issue; clearly God doesn't approve (Leviticus 18:22)

Leviticus? If you ever want someone who isn't a Christian to take you seriously, never bring up Leviticus as law that should be followed. If you believe it's words on homosexuality to mean that homosexuals are going to hell, then so is anyone who wears poly/cotton blend shirts, has a menstrual cycle, disobeys their parents (ever), shaves, get's a hair cut, is crippled, blind, or has a flat nose. If a priest's daughter is a whore, she is to be burned to death (but not if your daughter is apparently). So tell me... are you going to Heaven still?

I think there's a common paradoxical belief amongst Christians in the US that, rather than life being sacred, being alive is sacred. Life as a whole would include the entire cycle from birth to being consumed by the Earth. In this case though, I think it's more a case of FUD injected into their veins by the Church. I have no problems with religion, and consider myself to believe in some higher power. However, in my experience, Christian Churches spend way more time preaching about the punishment that awaits those who are not "saved" than they spend talking about how great it is to go out into the world and help your fellow man. The very concept that there is nothing you can do beyond blindly holding a belief to prevent eternal suffering in hell creates lots of FUD. It is not in the human nature to constantly blindly believe without at least occasionally questioning it. And the moment that you question it, is the moment that you create an instance where you will go to hell upon death.

I know of lots of people who use (read pirate) Photoshop, and sometimes combine it with Illustrator, for drawing on a computer. You could argue that Photoshop is also not the correct tool for this, but many actually prefer it over Corel Draw and Illustrator because the use the image manipulation functions in process. I don't know what percentage of users only use Photoshop for editing photos as compared to creating images, but it's significant enough that if GIMP users want to suggest it as a replacement for Photoshop, then the drawing community needs to be appeased. Not to mention, what if I want to circle something in a photo while editing the photo in other ways? (Also, ignore the straight line comment. I just poked around and found it not at all unintuitive. I don't know how difficult it is to implement a click/drag approach to drawing a circle or a straight line, but it's something that should be on the priority list for the development community, along with a "Photoshop Compatibility Mode" interface option to ease transition of professionals who's experience is entrenched in Photoshop as well as making it easier for Photoshop and GIMP users to talk back and forth about how to do the something that can be done on both applications.
