I've always thought Wiki needs a "Commit" switch, when somebody edits or updates, it is kept on the page as "unverified" where you can read it, if you feel that it is worthy info then you click commit, logging your approval (Xperts and Admins have more clout when they click commit obviously) until either it reaches a preset Commitance level or an admin/xpert approves it.

    Just a thought.

This is how lanaguge is formed, a word is used and then updated to reflect the times. IF CBC or whatever TV you guys have in America (BBC all the way) decided to label computer intruders as 'Trappers' im sure that word would have a very differant meaning to us now, and most probably you'd be writing an article and i'd be disagreeing. First, let it be said i live in the UK (btw, fuck the EU, they should use the pound!) so there is no anti-anybody bias here but this is typical of the EU.
You'd think i'd be in support of them, but far from it, apart from making a mockery of laws, they seem to be represented by every bent and dirty politician this side of the atlantic (Mendelson was pratically kicked out of England for being a wanker).
Its not just that either! each and every one seem to beleive in almost (in my warped view) a intellectual socialism, and this is a prime example!

No questions asked, America invented the internet (Its cool, the UK are still better) not even John Kerry would deny that (though he may claim it started in his back yard) pretty much every bit of tech that runs the routing, the serving, anything was developed in America.
Now for some weird and wonderful reson, the EU seems to think that because its this great comglomerate of nations that everybody who isn't them must bow at the knee and kiss the sandles.

*Sigh* as per my normal posts i'll sum up:

The Europe was jealous as fuck, because they're lame (cept england) and no matter how hard Bush tries, America will still be more powerful, militarily, and economically that the all the european countries put together.
    Europe will never admit this
We all gang up on America, Welcome to the EU
Ask for something completely unfounded, unreasonably and unrealistic, like...mmm...the internet
    America says: Fuck You Dude!
    EU makes angry faces
    catches America's eye
    Backs the fuck off.

I cant remember how this started but dammit it'll finish with:
The EU is a bad idea.
It gives lots of crappy little countries who have been piggybacking/freeloading of England for years the idea that they dont need as and the dont they anybody else!
Basically Europe is going through puberty people!!

Apple are on the verge of a make or break (do or die :p) deal to start on x86 (even though it already been hacked on) so that may redress the balance slightly but i doubt it, but as Foozmeister says its all about the ability to switch OS without switching apps, and thats a good direction that we're heading in. lets just wait for KDE4 Plasma hey :D

We spend less money keeping police on the street" thay actually sat down and thought, "How can we cut costs without taking coppers of the streets?" and like millions before them, they realized that when ur paying over £100 per license for a product you perhaps use 8% of (at most!) its not good economics.

Linux was designed as an ALTERNATIVE OS. Alternative being the operative word. And they seemed to get it right, the prrof being that was have so many distros.

Aside from the Soviet argument (which btw i liked very much) there is of course the practical side of things.

What most people will see in thier minds eye when they hear "Consolidate" Linux into one distro, is a kind of SUSE/Debian/Red Hat/Mandrake hybrid, with a lot less control over your system (ie almost all X based), So we can assume that this would be aimed at home users (I dont believe a person using a linux box as a dedicated server would clamour for a Unified Linux)

The first obsticle to overcome is the MASSIVE problem of bloatware. Without very careful planning, a mix of linux distros, would end up packed to the ears with...well...lets face it: crap.

The second problem is compatabiliy, almost all distros (Certainly the older and popular ones) have slight differances in their dir structure (lib paths etc). This, in the grand scheme of things, itsnt such are big problem, but it all adds up.

So anybody who really wanted to do this correctly would take (what he/she thought was) the most popular distro with the best support, and take its dir struct as his/her own) and simpley code in what he thinks are the best aspects of linux, taking out the problems.

Hold on a tick! I think i just described another distro!

See thats one of the big problems: where does it stop being "just another distro" and become Unified Linux, ill tell ya, it doesnt, unless all of the developers are working quite literally side by side, taking orders from a group of people put in charge to decide what this new system will achieve.

Hold on a tick! I just described Microsoft.

You see people, linux is more a concept than anything else, the kernal is useless alone, as is the software without it.
