Why not use some type of RFID system, where the owner keeps an RFID tag in his/her pocket. Once they move too far away from the laptop (2 or 3 feet?), the alarm sounds. Rather than making a conscious effort to arm the laptop, it would be automatic.
I'm only 23 years old and I can see the difference. When i first got my feet wet with technology, it was in the days of the 386. I've grown with the times for the most part. The kids today are going right to their pc and playing world of warcraft, not knowing the kind of technology that backs something like that up. It's pretty incredible how far we've come.
