  2. Obvious not insightful on Linux Five Years Away From Mainstream · · Score: 1

I am sorry but it doesn't take a bright person to realize this is a futurist point of view.

Seeing as we don't have flying cars, lack a cure for the common cold, and are waiting for an AIDS vaccine , most people could figure out the same view. Not that it isn't nice for a first post but seriously. Also, is it really neccessary to link to your own blog multiple times.

Moderators: Just because you agree with something does not make it insightful or informative. If it only takes .5 seconds for a person of reasonable intellegence to come to the same conclusion, it is not insightful.

  3. Thank you on Infrastructure for One Million Email Accounts? · · Score: 1

Am I the only person in the world who's actually gotten a message saying gmail is down. This happens to me every few weeks and usually lasts a minute or two. Not a big deal, but certainly not going to meet your reliability requirements.

Guess there is a reason they are still in beta.

  5. Voice is great so long as you can block it on How Voice Enhances Life Online · · Score: 1

I love VoIP. I get to actually talk to my friends from college while playing video games with them even though we are spread across the country. It let me have long talks with friends from home when they were having problems and I was studying in England.

At the same time, there are so many pre-pubecent Halo brats I've wanted to beat senseless for their talk BS. It can be great, but without controls and ways to boot the obnoxious VoIP can really suck. We've had it for years with text, but hearing 12 year old hellspawn say i pw3d ur 455 sucks that much more.

Those 5 channels are worth what I pay for the whole package. I don't like the QVC and MTV cruft between them, but that is asthetics. What bothers me is the 1 channel I would be willing to pay $10 a month for but can only get as part of a package that costs $20 more.

  7. Home School on How Can Tech Help Fight Education Costs? · · Score: 1

The reason home schooled students do better is because their parents are more likely to give a shit about their education. It has been consistantly shown that in schools higher parent participation correlates with higher scores. You never have the drain of the kid whose parents never give a crap on the aggregate scores. Home schoolers generally don't have single parents, divorced parents or the poorest parents. Also when you talk about scores, please say what test you are talking about or at least the scale the scores are graded on.

The BBC news service provides news clips for free in the UK. However if you are international you have to pay for a premium service since it isn't your tax dollars paying for it. I would guess that TV content would eventually be provided in the same way.

If the BBC does this internationally I'd be willing to pay for their content. Currently they have news clips available on-line and I would welcome a move towards internet broadcasting. I am tired of paying for 50 channels of cable when I only watch 5 of them and one of my other favorite channels I can only get by paying another $25 a month for an extended plan.

A platform *never* makes its money on the hardware. In fact, hardware is usual sold at a loss to get more market penetration for the GAMES. So though the XBox costs $400, it is doubtful you could match the processor and videocard for anywhere close to that amount.

  15. Re:Movie Theaters are Obsolete on Piracy Not To Blame In Decline of Moviegoers · · Score: 1

It isn't even the cost that gets me. I like going to the movies as a social event. However the last several times friends and I were looking to go to the movies our response to the listings were "Oh, nevermind. There is nothing out that I would rather stab myself in the thigh then watch." Having just moved from LA I have come to realize half the movies I used to watch were limited release (NYC & LA only) anyway. Since I can't get those on the big screen I will settle for my little screen with a decent film on it.

You are not seriously this ignorant. "The public wants Buck Rogers or Star Trek, not another Mars rover. Bleh!" Make science like TV and you get crappy science. It will take years before we can seriously try it though. It is 30 days of travel to reach Mars and the windows to get there and to return to Earth in a reasonable time frame tend not to line up so the trip would have to take longer than 2 months.

Clearly you missed the point that a lot of these prescriptions went to people with an addiction to prescription pain killers. These drugs are tightly controlled by responsible groups, like your local hospital. It really shouldn't be suprising that someone built what is essentially a small drug ring in this way. Think of who is the sterotypical prescription drug addicit: an uptight white middle class professional who wants to hide their dirty little secret. This guys spam really gave them just what they were looking for: the drugs plus some form of validation that they are not addicts because they have a prescription. Nevermind it comes from an unethical cashmonger.

Viral marketing as I understand it is a marketing company faking hype about something. Viral marketing can involve paying someone to walk around a major city listening to a song on their headphones and giving strangers a listen to "this great new band I just found" or making posts by a "number of people" discussing a movie in a forum to get more people interested.

The point of RSS is that you don't have to keep going back to check a website, like slashdot, to see if any new items have been posted. You can also navagate directly to the new posting you care about.

I neither see why you don't get it or why people are going crazy about it. Fine, it is push based content in its earliest form. It has a ways to go in practice.

Yet another example of why software should be firmly in the realm of copyright protection. That way, you can't copy what they wrote (unless given permission), but you're still free to offer a service based in the same *idea*.

Which is exactly why NO software company depends on copyrite law. Copyrite law grants a narrow range of protection for a very long time (Mickey Mouse is still copyrighted, and every few years Disney gets the coverage of copyrite law extended). Plus it is even harder to determine copyright violation in code (think Perl's wonderful way to do the exact same thing 15 apparently diffent ways).

So Vista wont be what most slashdotters use, but most of the rest of the world probably will. Hence it is made for the rest of the world (UI changes and parental controls, woohoo). With any luck, improved security means I will get less calls from the family for computer help. So go Vista.
