  1. Re:Environmentalism on BP's Final "Top Kill" Procedure For Gulf Oil Spill · · Score: 1

Do you write your car off as a loss whenever it gets in a fender bender, or do you see if you can save it first?

Does your car continue to threaten the entire state you're in when you get into a fender bender? Since that's the scale between a rig and the entire gulf and east coast, rather than the rig and the rig next door.

So we've doubled the amount of oil consumption, and we're averaging 1 accident every 31 years. I'd say regulations have worked out pretty well so far.

Doubled consumption != Doubled production or double the number of wells.

Yes, it is uncontained. There's oil all over the gulf at this point; if that's contained, we're halfassing on our definitions. It's semi-controlled, as you point out, but definitely not contained.

Let's get this portion out of the way:

    Dictionary.reference.com:
    reasonable
    –adjective
    1. agreeable to reason or sound judgment; logical: a reasonable choice for chairman.

My point is somewhat absurd, but completely accurate. It's considering the viewpoint of the one person in power, using whatever means necessary to keep that power and the benefits of it. You don't consider the people when you consider whether a theocracy can be reasonable or not. It's only about the theocracy when considering it from this view. When you're in control of the monetary system of a country, you're in control of a substantial portion of the population (the Iranian Revolutionary Guard comes to mind), and they end up having a vested interest (better living standard) by supporting you. As long as that group is well-motivated enough, and the general population is either indifferent to your rule or is fooled into believing you, you stand to gain a huge amount in terms of anything material, and very many non-material benefits as well.

TL;DR - It's not reasonable to allow a theocracy to run, but it is quite reasonable to be among the people running a theocracy; the reasonableness of a theocracy depends on the viewpoint.

  10. Re:Seems reasonable on Pakistan Court Orders Facebook Ban Over Mohammed Images · · Score: 1

Yes, there is. A theocracy is reasonable when the leaders use logic to keep themselves in power. It's totally reasonable for the CEO of any big company to try and avoid getting fired; why would the laws of logic apply differently for a government?

Texan books decide to marginalize the civil rights movement as being associated with the Black Panther movement, and you're advocating for "your rights remain[ing] untrampled"? Do you see that Texas is putting Jefferson Davis up there as a righteous individual alongside Abraham Lincoln and giving his words a platform? Do you see that they're suggesting McCarthy was justified in his persecution of people because of their beliefs? Do you see them removing hiphop, and inserting country as influential in American culture? Do you hear them netioning that the equal rights movement created "unrealistic expectations for equal outcomes"? Did you hear them try to remove any mention of Thurgood Marshall, the first black supreme court justice? Did you see them trying to remove Cesar Chavez, a mexican who led the creation of farmer's unions? Japanese-American internment is being called "the regulation of some foreign nationals". They're replacing large portions about Thomas Jefferson with John Calvin and Thomas Aquinas.

Do you not see that most of their revisions are seriously skewing history towards the view of white Christians rather than mentioning that a whole lot more shit went on in this country than this racist school board wants students to hear about?
