Truth is, the great depression effected a lot of other countries as well: Canada, Britian, and the rest of Europe for that matter. For the most part, Canada didn't have much intervention in the economy before this time. Its true that the stock market was heating up in those days. Buying on margin, stock market speculation, mass purchasing of penny stocks, drought, and mass production with no buyers are all other causes of the depression that are related.

One of the factors that that lead to the great depression in the '30s was having no government intervention in the economy. It may feel like a violation of your rights to not be able to sell your product at your own price when you have a monopoly, but there is economic stability to be had. If you charge outrageos prices for something so popular, you can impact many other things in the process.

First of all, I don't think I have ever found anyone who has ever come up with an accurate analogy for anything. When you compare totally different situations, there is allways some type of error. In your case, everything you said is pretty much in error. "balance freedom" is basically a bullshit term for limiting freedom, just like "special needs" is for retarded kids.

Software that you write is not sitting in Africa being bombarded by gun toting rebels and neither are you, so don't try to compare the two. If you want to write software and release it under the GPL, fine by me. But the truth is it is not as free as when you would release it under BSDL. The people who use your software are under a restrictive license, and I call that a restriction of freedom. And what do you get from this? You don't get anything personally from it except that you get to see your GPL community grow and the source remain open. Comprimising of freedoms is fine, but it means that someone's rights are restricted out there.

If you used a BSD license, you don't lose any freedoms by allowing people to incorporate your code with their product. Its not like they are taking credit for your work...they still have to include the original license with the source and binary and cannot relicense the code. I think you are getting the terms "rights" and "preferences" mixed up.

You can't be sure of that with a BSD lisense. You're just free not to be free at the next generation.

Yet again, this is just part of your uninformed opinion. I consider the ability to make software not free a freedom in itself. What you speak of is called a restriction, which means that the freedom in restricted in one form or another.

You can argue all you want with your warped sense of freedom. This does not make the GPL more free than the BSDL

You just don't understand economics very well. For a Linux company, the only profit will be a) CD sales, and b) tech support. This just doesn't make sense from a business standpoint. How much money can they make really? Tech support is probably low on the list of things they make money from (considering that Caldera is supposedly one of the easiest distros out there).

What they say is true.. Linux has been riding on hype, however, times are getting worse. If it wasnt for the tech hype of Linux then 60% of the companies wouldnt be around today. Caldera is not trying to start a flamewar, they are stating a fact. The gravey train has rolled in, stayed around for a couple of years... and now its departing at an alarming rate.

They were able to run it for a good length of time and get on the edge of the alpha quadrant (but crashing on a planet). This was erased, however, because Kim and Chakotay went back to fix it. But, if could run it for half the time, but make a couple of burst trips, they could be back in no time!!! Voyager is nothing compared to DS9. Havn't you ever noticed that all the episodes of Voyager are the freaking same??? Its either some stupid time loop or some of/all of the crew get abducted or held captive. Its too damn repetitive. They ruined the B'Ellana Torres character with making her pregnant and getting married to that moron Paris. Voyager is just a soap opera.

DS9 has a lot cooler non repetitive conflicts. It has an elaborate plot, and great characters. The only thing I hate about it is the stupid "new" Dax, but its not really that big of a deal. The only reason you probably dont like it is because you didnt start watching from the beginning and nothing made sense.

On another note, I would rather see the new series set in the future instead of the past. The only problem is that they are starting to run out of ideas. I dont want to see a "Timeship" series or anything like that, I want to see something with a helluva lot of kick ass CG ship fighting scenes. I dont want to see some dinky poor ass soap opera involving a love interest that spans a whole season. They are going to have to do a really good job of the show to keep me interested if it's set in the past (relative to TOS). There is a lot of potential for a good series, it seems to be wide open for new ideas.

I hope they dont wreck everything like voyager did. Voyager screwed up big time, all their time travel crap screws up the other series and the future for their own series. Does anyone not find the fact that Seven of Nine was assimilated by the borg ~20 some years ago in her parent's ship? This would probably be before the Federation even knew ANYTHING about the Borg. She would have been born way before TNG Borg encounters... and it would have took 10 some odd years to get to the Delta quadrant to inventigate the Borg!!! This would make them leaving ~30 years ago (from current voyager time).... WTF!! This is obviously not very accurate, but it just makes you think. ALL I WANT IS A WELL THOUGHT OUT STAR TREK SERIES WITH NO RELATIONSHIP CRAP AND NO PLOT HOLES!!!!
