    A cheap product, from food to consumable goods to durable goods to electronics, will always win

    Then you don't understand "cost" and "price" and users will pay for features that they need...and that includes brand. What they want is good value. Android currently offers phones hitting every "price" from low to high, as lower mark-ups and margins than competing products with a range of innovating features....its capitalism at its best.

    Apple for instance produce a cheap Chinese phone at a high price! which is why outside countries that hide this through massive subsides. Its a failure.

    Not to people want low priced phones; Large screen phones; Ones that take great Pictures; Lots of storage Phones; Robust Phones; Ones that double as Consoles; projectors; ebook readers; Remote Controls; Radio receivers and transmitters; Made in the USA rather than students and children. Marketing to local needs "Gold Clamshell" not a problem.

    Android got to be 85% of the market by hitting every price point, and hardware need geared toward that market, most users never think of tinkering...its kind of weird you think they do.

    Except vanilla Android is always a choice. In fact its interesting to notice that manufacturers are increasingly offering a "Dev" or Google Play edition, although you are exaggerating that reskinning Android makes it difficult to navigate, when in reality they often offer compelling features, not yet in stock android.

    Agree with the locked down, but then if you don't want that...Android is your only choice, and you can choice a device that offers it.

    Gnome still is the best (of some great) Desktops, and its choice of sensible defaults, and removing redundant controls are very sensible. What is wrong is Gnome shell. The bottom line is like Android this can be replaced with mate or Cinnamon, or Replaced entirely with KDE or XFCE, and that is something to be proud of...

    I agree that there is simply too much "crap" in the Android markets all over. The amount of good, quality, useful stuff is a seemingly small ratio of what's out there.

Now if these phones required proprietary software and hardware, locked down to one store, Breaking hardware and software standards. Like say the iPhone...I would argue that they would be "crap"(sic)

    Perhaps iOS needs more hardware choices.

    Most of the Android fans that I've bumped into choose their device in exactly the same manner as iOS fans; they choose whatever is in fashion at the moment

    Except most people aren't fans(sic) they are consumers, and they are choosing their devices based on a variety of reasons, based on obvious things like screen size and price...as well as less obvious things like a rugged device. Samsung may be the most popular of Android...it got there with crazy nice phones. We all like to joke Apple is just a brand...but they built creating incredible mind-share and media support by being early with great product, the fact that is expensive and behind has cost them a large chunk of market share.

    Dismissing anything as just fashion...especially on cutting edge technology is simply foolish.

    To be fair, Android is harder to navigate. There are desktop pages (similar to IOS app pages). Then there's a list of apps under the apps button. You can also copy stuff from the apps list to the desktop list.
    I find this paradigm very confusing. I've seen Android users get confused on this too.
    But, I desperately miss configurability in IOS. Absence of settings has my life very hard in the past... So has the conduit called iTunes. iTunes really sucks when it doesn't work properly, and is clunky when it does work.

    Itunes is a nightmare that should have been burned with fire, on Android you do not have this extra layer of complexity at getting content onto your devices.

    You talk about reconfigurability and settings...or the absence of them. Ignoring the irony of arguing for additional complexity at the cost of customisability, or that Apple copied the look of this with iOS 7 from Android, you argue that having a desktop(sic) that you can only add applications to is better than one you can add widgets to.

    I don't think you really understand your own argument.

    The Troll is Apple copied most of Androids OS functions with 7, catching up with many severely lacking features, although most people who have used one would be quite comfortable with the other. The real difference is the first party applications, and currently Google are simply the best.

    Ironically Apple is sacrificing market share for profits with its limited product line whatever you think of that. Microsoft really hurt themselves by using the software to limit the hardware, even advertising itself as much...buyers went elsewhere, and Microsoft are suddenly really flexible.

    I have the sameish processor and its surprisingly nippy. I just ploughed through the half life/2 series running at 1080P its getting on a little, but still looks very nice.

    I have been thinking of treating myself to an AMD card...because of the lesser of two evils Nvidia being a little too full of shit for my liking, when Intel can throw 30 programmers behind their open source graphics on Linux, but steam seems to have given Nvidia their blessing...but right now I don't have to rush that choice. I have on-board graphics that is fast enough with real support behind it.

    So you want to spend all day holding your arm out, just to avoid using the mouse buttons and scroll wheels?

    Not to mention wiping fingerprints off it every couple of hours.

    What possible use is there for a touch screen, when you have a mouse and keyboard

    Pinch, Zoom, scrolling, selecting several parts of the screen at once, pen and paper tasks...my favourite application is RTS games. You have to remember that keyboard and mouse is better for textual input/precise pointing and almost nothing else (well first Person Shooters ;). Its just that, that covers a lot, and you don't want to have your arms horizontal all day. As I said if they can put Android games in a window. I would be more than happy.

    If your conclusion is based on this fact then you should perhaps revise your opinion. Apple sales haves slumped for 5 quarters, and this is another quarter...the critical back-to-school quarter where Apple have slumped more than the rest of the PC market. Apple is failing in the PC market....even with the competitor being Windows 8.

    When are the idiots in upper management tech going to realize that no one in their right mind wants anything to do with touch on the desktop?

    I want touch screen on my Desktop. I would pay serious money to access my Google Play games on my Linux Desktop in a Window, What I don't want is Windows 8 interface or Gnome 3, or be tied to any touchscreen only interface.

    Clearly you have not been paying attention. Apple get away with everything. Lose a court case...get a free pass from the president, even after laughing at him that the would not assemble in America, against a company that manufactures in America.

    Apple promised to have a standards connector,, to be more green...ships another propriety connector. Not considered Green any-more due to turning its computers into disposable electronics, Government changes rules making Apple Green.

    Phone too slow to run Flash, despite thousands of games and videos still using it. Flash is at fault despite running ofn competitors phones...and yet still without a viable replacement. years later.

    Don't want to pay % of phone for patents for FRAND...doesn't have to, bullies others for design patents...and that does include a rectangle with round corners, and a few minor interface patents.

    Won't fix machines if wet or smoke...and then only with old parts, and less than the statutory requirements.

    Hell they not only don't pay tax ANYWHERE, they sit and lie about it and again get a free pass, even when they have ibonds to deliberately blatantly should pay tax.

    The only example I can think of is when they were ordered Apple to publicly state that Samsung did not copy...and they acted in predicable childish manner...again to little consequence.

    Apple have no consequences, fortunately they have little market share, due to their incompatible, closed, cheap products sold at high prices.

    Apple have neglected the computing products for a long time (even removed "computers" from its name), and have made no secret of making its(not your) computers, non-upgradable, disposable electronics, rather than General purpose machines, The move to 64-bit arm is a heartbeat away, with the dream of a touchcreen iPad. I wish them success.

    The reality is its computing sales have dropped for 4 quarters, and it looks like this will be another quarter of its sales dropping faster than the PC market...even with Windows 8 as a dead weight.

    It looks like linux is going to continue to be the only bright spot in an otherwise lackluster market. The Irony of years of "Year of Linux" meme is kind of sad how quickly Microsoft and Apple gave there duopoly away (at least Apple still has 13% of the smartphone market)

    Not even close. Apple occupy the unique position of being a mid range; low cost; high priced; highly subsidised phone that limitied its penetration to the US where its brand has a lot of power. In China its a joke. Android occupy the Low; Mid and High range as well as all sizes; tastes; unique designs. Microsoft have made a tiny bit of growth, at the very bottom end of "Nokias" traditional markets...its a topic to itself.

    Their share price dropped from an all time high at around that very time, but blackberry continued to grow for three more years. What killed blackberry was not the iPhone, but poor decisions, like its ill fated tablet, and its late blackberry 10 operating system.

    Unless people are willing to boycott Sony and not buy a PS4 over this kind of thing, they have no incentive to stop.

    Why boycott Sony? When you can boycott Foxconn products like the iPhone and Xbox. Sony have their own manufacturing plants. Where do you think the UK made rasberry Pi is made? Sony's Pencoed factory. I suspect that Foxconn will not be making the PS4 long term, but have used Foxconn to deal with its initial demand, their are very few companies who could have taken on this contract.
