    I have not been following Microsofts Rise, but the stock rose on the News that Microsoft financial statements were better than expected, and even though news of Windows being awful..which turned out to be true. It remained profitable in other areas; due to price rises elsewhere and live services on its EOL console. It rose again on news of a large investment by a third party know for positively influencing companies.

    ...but its stock is not rising because of its OS failure, but despite it. Longer term it will continue to affect other sectors of its business. In context of this Article Google has reached new highs too...I believe even Apple have clawed back 9%.

    Windows 8 is not available to me from Microsoft only an upgrade I cannot use. From Microsoft http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/buy?ocid=GA8_O_WOL_Hero_ShopHP_FPP_Null the prices are $155 for a Windows 8 Upgrade or $295 for Windows 8 Pro. I could not find a version of retail Windows 8 anywhere. What is true for you is not true for me.

    To be fair installing the the whole of Ubuntu is now a few basic dialog boxes and leave for 20 minutes

    I know your trolling but Linux Desktop market share has been steadily rising for sometime, and that is without the onslaught of Chrome (and soon Android Boxies).

    What you're saying is that Apple isn't doing as well as Android on the world stage. What I'm saying is that Apple is solidly regaining its lead in the United States. Both statements are correct.

    No he didn't he said "iPhone sales are actually growing again, and now exceed Android phone sales. Worldwide, the numbers are also trending back in that direction." its just a lie the reality Apple’s global market share is plummeting.

But the idea that Apple is regaining a lead...because the market shifted 2-3% is a bold statement ;)

    I think you need to look at Micro$ofts Financial statements. It makes money hand over fist despite turning its profitable PC business into a touchless tablet...While not selling any actual tablets. Financially its been a success...and by the market it is seen as one going forward Its why its share price is up 25%...and Apple is buying back shares after its shareprice has dropped 45%.

    If you are sill defending your mega corporation on profits alone you need a better argument. (It was always a little silly)

    That's only half the story. When Android first came out on phones, they rapidly overtook Apple because there were a bunch of new players jumping into the game. Now that the market has stabilized, the pendulum is swinging back the other way.

    ...the other half of the story I'm afraid to tell you is a whole lot worse here are the latest figures for Apple smartphones http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24085413 The short version is Apple dropped in one quarter from 23% to 17.3%. Year on Year it had single digit growth of 6.6% in a market that grew 41%. What your saying in not only off-topic but not true.

    I am not sure where the concept of a tablet being about passive consumption came about. The reality is the new breed of tablet that come with pens have the potential of being more productive. That is not to say your passive consumers on today tablets...that is simply not true.

    If you had said a mouse makes a better better pointing device than a finger, or for a competent typist can type marginally faster than someone swiping with their finger. I'd agree, and for a single task computer that replies on these things...like a typist a computer is better, for everyone else its a trade on portability; storage; screen estate.(I personally think they Desktop & Tablet compliment each other nicely)

    Personally I use a Desktop almost everything...but that is because of its great big screen, not any misguided belief in productivity.

    You have to question the wisdom of chasing the iPad which has dropped to 40% http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24093213 of the tablet market for 3 quarters (even after launching a smaller tablet) having been overtaken by Android, and growing less than half the overall market (Android is almost doubling growth).

    As for competing with Apple because of an Office product even if it were true http://www.androidauthority.com/libreoffice-android-release-171002/ Libreoffice is getting frustrating close to release.

    You can tell Microsoft and Apple want the safe Duopoly back; Androids monster growth is not going to stop anytime soon, the iPad is a dying platform.

    ...and right now that hardware is selling badly as natural market forces come into work, one of its options would be to sell music; books; applications and take a cut of the profits. the PC market is 1.2Billion computers.

    Right now what saved Microsoft last earning was it had managed to Diversify enough, so its Windows sales drop did not hurt it short term. Google famous for selling advertising space is suddenly collecting more and more of its Revenue elsewhere (even without Motorola).

    Currently Apple is simply the iPhone company...and because of that it looks incredibly weak

    I think they should take over Nintendo. Since the launch of the Wii U. It just seems such a interesting match.

    But the reality is they should do the boring things, like compete on price, have a product range..things every other company has to do in a maturing market.

    The problem is they should have done the opposite of Steve...and focused on creating a great product we would love, license the OS for nothing, remove restrictions from the hardware....Like Android.

    Considering the "I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this" patent wars Apple has instigated in the smart phone and tablet markets, I wouldn't exactly say they gave them away.

    Having a strategy...that failed to stop *sales* of a larger range; better value; standards following; more open; platform. There are strategies against that, but they decided to swim in money instead.

    Going forward whose FRAND patents that allowed Apple to enter the phone market will not be available to Apple in future (and unfortunately anyone else). Apples interface patents have been worked around or ignored now. It was a dumb play...at lest they get to take home 1billion...no 650 Mill..no 459 Million.

    All Apple achieved is replace standards...with Android. It is the worst of all worlds.

    The Desktop market is shrinking in favor of tablets and smartphones. Two areas where apple has strong products (One could argue they created those markets).

    I think if nothing else Apple has learned form history, both its own and the many other PC companies that, well, no longer exist

    Except its an insane fantasy...the PC industry is still dripping with money (although not considered as sexy as tablets).

    Lets be honest Microsoft & Intel make over 70% gross margins (Apple executives used to remember good margins)...admittedly HP has to suffer at only 20% *rolls eyes*

    ..but again none of that changes the statement that Apple (Inc...not computer anymore, now they are not a PC..one phone company) and Microsoft both profit from the stable Desktop Duopoly, pretending that they are in any way in conflict is a little sad...celebrating the fact as an Apple user because Apple make a lot of money from its users, I have always found bizarre.

    ...and again real competition is coming from Android (or Chrome...or Chromified Android), and Linux continues to make strides.
