    Which incidentally is exactly why Microsoft is so worried about Android and iOS becoming the consumer standard for desktop / laptop. That is why their Win8 strategy makes sense, they don't want to be in RIM's position in 2022.

    They should wish to be in RIM's position. Microsoft Phone OS is not looking healthy and from Q3 Nokia Financial Statements...the main supplier of Phones its all bad news, and they deserve it.

    A phone is not just a phone...It hasn't been for a long time. Apple would be out of business if that was true. Phones are Jewellery and have been for a long time. The other side of the coin is why shouldn't I have a nice phone, that I'm proud of and can show off. I worked for it!

    Stupid people like to tease me for liking Star Trek and the Misfits. Fuck them, it's what *I* like that matters to me. If you switch phones because your old one isn't cool enough, you're a dipshit and deserved the mockery you were getting in the first place.

    Fitting in is important, although liking Star Trek which is pretty mainstream getting you teased is really surprising. I think perhaps you shouldn't cosplay all the time.

    Seriously Apples market share has dropped for a second quarter. Its not been the cool phone sing the Galaxy III...and never was for the youth however the media try and spin it. Ironically Blackberry had the youth market.

    Seriously iPhone fever....hiding your blackberry behind your iPad. All these cool(sick) people not wanting a blackberry.

    I'm so pleased the days of Apples dominance is gone.

    It's a race to the bottom.

    They make the revenue by giving up your location and what you do. After all: this is Google we're talking about. Between Adsense and Google apps you use, there are no secrets. At.All.

    People pay for your secrets, so buyers get a nebbishy netbook wannabe, and think they're getting a deal. Yeeeesh.

    Like smartphones, they can sell it at or under cost and make money on the back-end.

    Race to the bottom is just how capitalism works. Its why Apples [who make siri useless with advertising] market share in phones continues to drop. Google will never give away your secrets, because it is not a good business model. They sell advertising space.

    Yeah that's the great thing about the free desktop experience a.k.a The Linux Desktop Shuffle. There's a seemingly endless supply of half-assed perpetually 80% done bug-ridden bits of desktop infrastructure you can sift through whenever you have a problem, until you find a combination that offers the best comprimise between something that kinda-sorta-works well enough and something you actually want to use.

    I think you should get back to arguing which versions of Windows are the good ones, or why first versions of windows are always rubbish, or discuss how awful Mac OS was before BSD came to the rescue.

    The truth is Linux has a choice of mature desktop environments, bug free, and feature complete. Linux may have problems, but your lie isn't one of them.

    Android? WTF?

    If you don't understand why it was essential for Google that Mobile was not dominated like Microsoft does on the Desktop, to protect their main revenue stream...advertising, I am surprised given the fact that they pay Apple to have Google as the default search engine, and the problems they have had with Microsoft controlling the defaults to your desktop, and recently crippling other browsers. Its the same reason they do Chrome.

    That said I just notice that they are launching the Play Store purchases in India. I'm be astonished if Android is not self funding.

    Tell that to my kids, they're favorite game is called "Drop the iPad." Too bad you can only play it once.

    There are some lovely tablets geared toward the children market with Android on them. The specs and price are none too shabby either.

    I would buy an iPad because the MS tablet isn't out yet.

    I bought an Android tablet [Nexus 7] because it was because it has better than an iPad for less money. The surface has nothing to make me regret that purchase.

    A pet peeve of mine (and one of my biggest gripes with Google News) is promoting news sources that are nationally or geographically far removed from the event in question. In this case, I noticed the British spelling of "finalise", which directed my attention to the fact that the linked article is from the BBC. So then I assumed this was in some way related to the London Stock Exchange, or it was the UK division of Google that prematurely released the figures. However that is not the case as this was indeed suspended on NASDAQ and involved the parent Google company.

    I'm not sure why we are subjected to a journalists biased view, rather than post the financial statements. http://investor.google.com/financial/tables.html.

    10 years ago, people were paying £450 for a full Office software suite, so the idea of spending an equivalent amount for Office on a tablet isn't that much of a dealbreaker when you consider it.

    Its not 10 years ago. In the modern world have a plethora of cheap and free on-line and off-line competent Office suites.

    Everyone is telling me that the Nexus 7 just doesn't have the screen size and they NEED an iPad. When the iPad 7 comes out they'll flock to it and go, "Uh. Siri?" Then apple will discontinue Siri for being worthless.

    I'm not sure who this everyone is but I bought a Nexus 7 and I can tell you its got a wonderful screen size...but If they needed a larger screen size Android tablets come in larger screen sizes. ...and I bought a Nexus 7 with my own money.

    targeting the existing 1.3 billion Windows users.

    Personally I think they should have focussed on getting those potential customers to buy their product insteasd of those great value Android tablets, rather than go toe to toe with Apples massive mark-up/closed garden for its brand.

    That makes no sense. Productivity has become another bullshit word. Its also irrelevant in this context. Its a tablet aimed at the consumer market...Unlike say the iPad you will be able to watch video on it. Without great big black bars on it. Personally better value tablets of all dimensions can be had with Android on it.

    The market for e-books is still very centred in the UK(20%) and US(30%). The EU commission which is also investigating Apple and the the other 5 crooks is hoping to reach a settlement!?

    Why don't class action lawsuits have a cap on what he lawyers can make? They should be capped at $300.00 an hour or $500,000.00 whichever is smaller, before taxes.

    This has nothing to do with lawyers involved in a class action lawsuit. This is 100% to do with Apple and Five Book Publishers being a bunch of evil crooks...they formed a cartel to fix prices, hurting the free market and the consumer. Its about the "U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division" investigating Apple and the five publishers for two years, and getting them to reimburse money stolen by Apple from customers, and they have been told not to conspire for a further 5 years. Interestingly they do list the state fees and costs...$7.5 Million which is a lot less than $69 Million.

    I'm curious how a strategy has failed when it's just starting to be implemented. Windows 8 has yet to be released, a handful of Windows 7 phones were released just before Windows 8 was announced, Nokia's market share is growing worldwide (US market being the exception), and Christmas is just around the corner. Nokia has enough on-hand cash and income to keep operating for another 2 years, even if nothing changes.

    I'm anticipating that we start seeing signs of a turnaround by first quarter 2013.

    You really haven't read the article have you. The short version is the plan for Windows Phone exclusivity has worked out badly as a solution when they had massive Mindshare; Market share; Carriers connections; Microsoft allegedly on there side. Now they have lost those things, their current lineup has been obsolete cutesy of Microsoft stabbing them in the front with the Windows 8 announcement and moving onto HTC who will offer equivalent Windows Phones cheaper. In fact if anything [and we still have two very dry quarters before then] Things will get worse, as they now are fighting for a few % market share with cheaper products. The only way Nokia is going to survive is by changing directions, Nokia has choices even now after burning all its bridges, but none are easy. Elop only has one take the company with his to oblivion, and that is what he is doing.
