    You have not been paying attention. Linux installs outweigh windows 3 Times. Apple and Microsoft are giving the computing market away.

    There are lots of replacement news sites for Linux Gaming especially since the growth of steam and humble bundle, but Open source gaming as was, has (and still does) have some incredible games; Many of these gems I would have overlooked if not for this great site.

    ...All devices are pretty much Linux Devices, apart from those of the Apple/Microsoft Persuasion but those have small product ranges and sell in (relatively) limited numbers.

    In android parlance, it is called "rooting."

    Apple treats you as a criminal...and apparently the users act like them, it is done through breaking the weak security of the iOS operating system, often to return basic features.

    Google gives you (the option) of control, and supplies ample warning before the user chooses to this, it is an option on some phones...even a selling point, mainly used to load none play applications (Android is Eden...with gates).

    Basically nothing like each other.

    They don't need to fight an attrition battle for market share - they just need to keep enough high-end users so that their platform remains the preferred launch point for developers.

    Except Android already had more Applications than Apple so it cannot be true, and this divide is set to grow, In China for example...who is going to produce local applications for 1% of the population. This is simply another example why Apple needed to maintain market share.

    Apple's share of the phone market has grown year after year after year without fail. There is a sub-market called smartphones, that's different.

    I find it somewhat Ironic that when Nokia occupied the position of owning the Phone market. Apple shareholders *cough* would focus on their presence in smartphone market. It is a telling that shareholders now quote the Phone market...with their plummeting market share in smartphones. The phone market (if you are splitting hairs) is *replacing* the Phone market and smartphones are already overtaken phones this year.

    In context of this article...are those in rural china who are still on feature phone going to buy a lightly subsidised iPhone even a $100 cheaper last years model in plastic. I would strongly suggest not.

    Except those figures are laughable. Other measures claim 1%...the ones that include the whole of china not just one or two inner city stores. Worldwide Apple marketshare has been flat at 5%-7%

    Apple desperately needs to stay relevant with its continues to drop behind in market share worldwide, and is soon to retain relevant only in the relatively small market of the US (UK and Japan maybe) where the high subscription masks the overpriced midrange iPhone. China Mobile does not have high subscription rates

    The reality is though is that that this deal is unlikely make much impact (it will result in new sales). The iPhone is already available in China it is about 1% of the market (The claims of 20% apply to measures in a few stores in cites and rightly have been laughed away)

    Apple needs to drop its(compete on) price to remain relevant in a worldwide market. Putting last years phone in cheap plasic only helps their bottom line.

    Its not often discussed in a sensible manor, but Nokia's minor(if I am being kind) success in the smartphone market was with new customers at the very bottom end of the market...one where Apple promoting journalists may describe as being filled landfill android, but never was. If they has a competitive OS(they don't, haven't and probably won't) instead of competing only price and quality(ish, but in reputation definitely) hardware . Ironically the Moto G was launched this month (I've used it its stock androidish) is unbeatable this market segment(I wish I had never bought my Nexus 5, and I love it). I still think the market would have responded better to a Nokia android phone(or once upon a time with a Meego one), but launching now with an android phone without the Play store is just stupid...they would be be better going with sailfish or stock anything else is stupid(Unless someone is going to have some amazing revelation involving Nokias only money payment system). Notice how I am assuming that Nokia do this like apple with a designed in Finland.

    Moral: Never place too much trust or respect in a CEO of a private company.

    Except most here are pretty happy with Ubuntu wanting to make money. The (recent) direction Ubuntu is taken is a unified ecosystem across platforms, and some of us think that result is not pretty...but the stable;cutting edge; pretty desktop we loved. Personally I always thought they should have got their store and by extension games sorted before Humble/Bundle and Steam got themselves together, and their approach to Music has been uninspired.

    Pursuit of Money should not only be considered healthy buy encouraged.

    The 'linux communities' have all devolved into petty little fiefdoms of some degree.

    Except its a lie, As both a Gentoo and a Ubuntu user. I have enjoyed massive support both though chat and forums, and bug reports. In fact on a whole most OS communities are pretty helpful including those of Windows/Mac. People on the whole like to help.

    Lets be honest this is more about Mir and Unity(and maybe Amazon integration for a few of us), being promoted over *Alternatives* and both have been discussed on and off topic to death. Whatever you personally think of these choices, users currently have a choice of Desktop(and I am still not going to choose Unity), and Mir is still a twinkle Shuttleworth's eye. I am personally using the very polished Xubuntu(promoted by the Cinnamon split from Gmone), which smooths over the clash between GTK2/3, and other than a stupid oversight with the volume indicator. Has been the best desktop I have ever used...and yes I do miss a few Gnome features, but it has its own to love, and I am in love with Gmusicbrowser.

    The bottom line it is still is the no brainer Linux install...unless you are wedded to (the still wonderful) Cinnamon (personally I am keeping my eye on Cut http://cut.debian.net/ ), I wish Canonical all the luck with their phone, If they can wed themselves to decent Chinese manufacturer that can produce low cost phones. It may be my next phone.

    Ironically for you the iPad is a POS $89 Chinese tablet with a massive mark-up. Although seriously Apples sales are not only destroyed by Android, they are flat(actually dropping) despite explsive market growth. Perhaps they should compete on price.

    That's funny because Apple seems to be the only smartphone maker paying attention to such laws, not building needlessly dense displays that suck power like a kid with a juice box.

    I bought the Nexus 5 which comes with premium 5" 1080P screen and is half the price of the bottom end iPhone. There are phones that come with similar screens to the iPhone like the Moto G for instance which is a sixth of the price of the iPhone.

    For low and some mid-range stuff, sure. But Intel is never going to be able to get above that so long as nVidia and AMD keep cranking out new components year after year

    Personally I love the thought (and so does the market, and manufactures) of getting a more powerful Fanless; Cheap; supported by reliable first party open source developers discreet GPU. That gives me a massive boost over what I am getting over my current APU performance. In reality its only a few specialists (albeit more newsworthy) that really buy into the high end anyway.

    In many markets Google has a near monopoly position. Their global smart phone market share is around 80% and in some markets it's even higher. Bundling an office suite in order to leverage their dominant operating system is unlikely to sit well with regulators.

    I sure you were against the inclusion of Microsoft Office crapware with every version of its OS. I personally welcome the EU including a start screen on Desktops. Ignoring that Apple has started to bundle iwork...and Microsoft has started including crippled office with its tablets.. neither of these is available for Android. The reality is though Microsoft Office is the monopoly on Microsofts formats something they secured through buying votes in ISO. This will help stop the current compatibility tax myth.

    Let's get real. An office-ish app on a smart phone is NOT a challenge to a full blown desktop office suite. To suggest that it is indicates an absolute lack of understanding of the user base and use cases for office suites.

    Its not just a challenge its a threat to 60% of Microsofts Profits. Right now Android passed 1 Billion activations in September(windows is about 1.2Billion), while Microsoft thinks delaying its suite to get people to buy their OS. If you don't think its a treaty then you do not understand how people use Office.

    Ironically their is strong evidence, that Apple copied from Sony. Even if it is not true it shows clearly that others were moving in the the same direction. We also saw in the trial the massive range from Samsung in the pipeline, we also see full screen prototype from Google. Hell they were beaten to market by similar phones

    The reality is Apple came out the gate with an great first product, and have become the richest company by market cap on the planet because of it, but that was then and the myth of Steve Jobs is now hurting not helping Apple

    The bottom line is their is a real problem with Apps stealing users data on *every* platform; it needs to be addressed, The Android lie is not only offensive; It obscures a real problem.

    Those prices are in line with North America as well.

    America is an unusual market that has a business model by carriers that allows for highly subsidised phones. So Price has less impact as well. It has allowed the iPhone which is a cheap phone with an expensive selling price to be massively profitable (The same model in china means it commands 1%). Samsung is selling phones with more expensive features (large screen, more memory, faster processor) at a cheaper price...as a direct competitor to Apple, something you perpetuate here, and it has also made it very profitable (well and they are cutting edge, manufacture in america, and have a large product range, using features customers want)
